nice write up. at first, i thought your thread was about preferring your air-cooled variety over your brand new one, and your decision to sell your 997, but you concluded quite nicely about each 911 being unique and 'special' in its own way. for a little while, i owned my 996 at same time as my 997, and while the 997 is superior in every way, there was something more pure and basic about driving the 996 that admittedly, i on several occassions, thought about just keeping the 996 instead of the 997 which was supposed to replace it. (ironically, it was the fact that i thought the 996 was so basic/unrefined as a DD that i wanted to upgrade, but despite all the naysayers, the 996, dynamically, is truly a great car). the 996, likely due to its smaller wheels, felt more tossable and fun especially on small twisties. in the end, though, i don't think it's a matter of preferring any one model over another, it's just fun to experience different ones at different times.

My first P-car was a 1990, 964 blk/blk. You just reminded me how much I truly loved that 911. Driving her from Fripp Island to Beaufort, (SC) and back everyday (Mon thru Fri) for 5 years was awesome. I regret selling her but the 993 was also special and the 997 well you all know already (Incredible). I could only imagine the 911 in another 20 years; I just hope I am still here in 2027 for a little taste testing. = )

Growing up with a 964 as my brother/sister, i know that exact smell perfectly...i used to go and sit in the car when i was little just to smell it. One thing that is missing in these newer cars, its that classic 911 "smell"...maybe with age...maybe

Sometimes we forget that one of the consequences of refinement is the loss of personality. One of the joys of antique cars is that you typically need to know a secret ritual just to get them started. Refined, powerful cars are great....but they're also pasteurized.
