Pull the battery negative cable before you touch any orange wires. Disconnecting the battery will safe the system.
That being said - reconnecting the battery and turning on the key w/o the airbag module properly connected will set an airbag fault code, as stated above.
BTW, BMW is the same re:setting a code... Ask me how I know. :-(

Here's a set of pics I found someone made as a tutorial on replacing the 997.2 steering wheel. I have not done it yet myself but I too am interested in if you need to loosen the T20 or just push on it?

Turn the wheel 90 degrees clockwise, that puts the hole at the 9 o'clock position. Then you can push your torx or favorite small tool in there. What you are pushing on is a metal "spring" that retains the airbag. When you push on it it releases the bag and it comes out. Very simple. There is nothing to turn.
Once you remove the nut, mark the steering wheel and shaft to ensure you put it back perfectly centered. Be careful tightening the steering wheel nut. The wheel is mag and can crack if you over torque it.... factory spec is 37 lb/ft.
Cheers

If I remember correctly:
Disconnect the battery to avoid having an airbag error light.
Push an allen wrench up through the hole in the bottom of the steering wheel to release the airbag. Gently pry it out and disconnect it.
You can use a large allen wrench to unscrew the bolt holding the wheel on. You do not need a torx bit. Worked fine for me.
Mark top dead center before you pull the wheel off. You don't want to have the alignment off.
When you reinstall the airbag, be careful that the airbag wire doesn't obstruct the airbag movement or your horn may not work.
If you are putting in a multifunction wheel, you need to have it activated by a shop.
You will get some kind of error light at first, but it goes away after you drive the car.

Yes, this was a piece of cake. Battery disconnect. 4mm allen, push on the airbag, pish the allen into the spring, the airbag pops right off.
My PSM, PASM warning light came on after the borrowed core wheel was put back on. Drove it two blocks and all good.
