Yes, cosmoline in my opinion smells like a combination of brake and clutch brew. However, I would get the P-car checked next time your in the neighborhood of your dealership to make absolutely certain.

my 996 and 997 both have the same burning smell. dealer assures me absolutely normal. in addition to cosmoline and general oil, agree with meaker might have something to do with the exhaust being exposed in the rear wheel wells.

Bingo. Any road tar, bits of plastic or other oily debris can get stuck to the mufflers and slowly emit vapors as it's cooked.
