If you can afford the M6 with nice options you might consider the 997tt for 20% more.
On the other hand, a 997S with modest equipment may be 10-15k less than the M6.

The M6 or 6 series in general is one of the ugliest BMW's I've ever seen. Most of the new BMW's look horrible. I like BMW and have owned 5 of them in the past. I just don't like the look of the new ones. The Carrera is a classic time piece and will put a smile on your face every time you drive it.

Carrera S over M6.

Not to complicate it further but I would always to a SL55 or CL55 over the M6.

M6 has the ugliest roofline ever --especially when compared with the 911.

Now the 12 cyl 850 --that was a hot car in its day....

I'd be willing to venture that the 911 would be the car of choice between the two for pure driving enthusiests.

Having said that, nobody would argue with defining the 911 as a sportscar.

The M6 is definitely sporty, probably a sportscar, but definitely more of a GT car than the 911 is, and that's the basic point.

If one was after a track car for instance, I think the choice would be clear. The M6 is heavy and will not handle like a 911. On the other hand , if one is after a luxo fast and comfy car, the M6 is probably the better buy.

I don't think the question is so much which car is better, but rather what do you want? Each does it's thing very well.
i guess it's all relative... you are right...

i am not saying anything bad about the 997, but it has a satellite navigation system, satellite radio, heated seats, automatic suspension electronics, leather everywhere, bluetooth, the most engineered cup holder in the world, etc.... if it is a sportscar, then I am just not sure that the M6 isnt...

I test drove M6 before deciding on the Carrera S. M6 is not as good looking as the Carrera, and interior does not warrant the 100K+ price tag with the full leather option. My full natural brown leather interior simply looks more expensive. iDrive is simply ugly, requiring multiple button to change radio station. Handling/feeling wise, M6 lacks direct feedback, feels more isolated than my M3 vert at that time. Carrera simply is better. Weight-wise, Carrera is so much lighter, and Carrera's shifter is amazing and you don't need to worry about the red cog death that so many M5/M6 owners have seen. Choose the Carrera and you won't regret it.

I love BMWs but, over the years BMW has made the driver feel more & more detached from the driving experience. For me, the i-drive was the final blow. My friend just bought an M5, one of the finest BMWs out there. After about a year, he now knows how the SMG works. Porsche is one of the few cars that still gives you that feeling of simplicity. I know it is more complicated than it looks, but it does so in areas that are necessary IMHO. Go spend some time driving both and you will come to the choice that is best for you.

Like others have said - you want a sports car or a GT car? If I was looking for a GT I (as someone else also said) would much prefer the new Maser GT than the M6. May not be as fast, who knows how reliable, but Oh my God, it is beautiful.

Not to mention PARK ASSIST and a TORQUE CONVERTOR auto trany!

I get your drift too

PS. I hope Porsche makes a Cayman RS that's nice and light.

If you want a GT in that price range, consider the AMV8. One of the most gorgeous cars. Ever.

The M6 is heavy, ugly, and loaded with unreliable electronic gizmos that will only entertain you for a day or so. The handling, braking, and feel of the 997 will amaze you every time you drive it for the next 5 years (or longer). It IS a sports car (though it certainly has been luxed up over the years).

The Porsche is still a car that you can use to commute to and from work during the week, then drive to a racetrack on weekends, and perform flawlessly. Although most buyers won't take advantage of that capability, it is unique.

What has kept me from buying a BMW during the past few years is precisely what kept me from buying a 996. I don't like the way the new BMW's look.

At this level, and at these prices, you should be able to say you love the way your car looks as well as how it drives.

997S for me.

First of all, like I said before I own both, and both have been moded. The M6 is not an auto, there is no torque converter. With the right mods the M6 can handle fairly well for a big GT car. I would put the M6 on par with my 04 575, in fact the M6 with my mods I've done is faster. The back seats are just like my 997S, alittle more room, but still for kids. In a straight line, unless you have a SC 997S, the M6 is a faster car. I am glad I have both. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose but around here Porsches are everywhere, the M6 turns more heads (hell my wifes Maserati Qport turns more heads) than my 997S does.

Thanks for posting a photo. That front end isn't working for me. Maybe it's just the color?

I suppose with wind tunnel work all cars will eventually look like a 14 day old bar of bath soap.
