Default Engine Hesitation

I've edited this prior post to better reflect the issue - thanks to responses.

Broke past my first 500mi today on a trip up to Napa.
Found some spectacular roads & scenery off the beaten path.

The not so good:
On the way home, I noticed a mild sputtering on highway, like fuel was being cut off but had enough gas. I knew oil was going to be needed soon, but no lights.

I was almost back by my car so drove about 3 more miles to see if it was bad gas or would clear, which it didn't. I then pulled off, sure enough, blinking oil level light when I checked it. I added 7/8 of a quart of Mobile 1 10W-30 (all I had). Now shows full at the level and runs fine.

Questions: Is it a problem with the 7/8 of a quart of 30 weight oil? (I know I need 0W 40).
Is it likely I did any damage driving it for 3 miles?
How come no lights??

After reading the following link:

https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...0&page=6&pp=15

looks clear it's not an oil issue but an issue many have experienced.
Here's some similarities I've drawn:

- Spirited Mountain driving (elevation changes) which I did that day
- tends to happen at lower fuel tank levels
- happens both with tip and std 6spd
- often appears in lower miles (first 500-4000)
- fixes itself after car sits for 20+ mins
- no solution yet except for disconnecting the batt cable for several hrs resetting the computer.

I guess I'll bring it into the dealer on monday so this is documented in case I have further issues....unless anyone has any other suggestions...

This might be helpful

You can search for topics relating to oil useage. Based on what you say here, doesn't seem that what you experienced is low oil level related. Was your car level when you saw the blinking oil light? How many bard down were you when you knew you'd need to add oil?

Wow - thanks for the link.
No, my car is not a tip and I don't "2 foot"
Car was pretty close to level ground when I check/added with the blinking level light.

I did stop for about 20mins when I added oil - which I now doubt was the cause as the what's described in the link sounds more like it.

I was/am down to my last bar on the fuel tank - but no fuel light (about 100mi of gas left).

Maybe there's some clues here that may be indicative of the cause...

Hmmmm, same thing is happening to me. Well, sometimes at stop lights the revs will drop right down to 600rpm ish and other times it feels like the car is surging?

I think it might be the MAF or the sensors in the catalytic converters? Either way it's going in tomorrow.

My car exhibited similar intermittant rough running/surging symptoms when it was new.
If I shut off and immediately restarted the engine the "problem" was corrected. The symptom has not returned during the last 10,000 miles.

Apparently this symptom happens very occasionally with the 997. I ran into it myself once in 10,000 miles. When stopping for refuelling it appeared to correct itself.

Don't think it is related to oil level. Just a coincidence.

When I had the stumble issue (late last summer), I took the car to the dealer. They dumped the ECU, send the dump to Stuttgart. Next am, they had an email from the factory instructing them to reflash the Motronic with a later version of the software.

BTW, the fuel system "vapor locking" issue was not my problem - venting the filler cap did not resolve the stumble.

Since then, no issues. Also, I've switched to Shell 93 octane only - no more BP Ultimate. Since I did this on the dealer's recommendation at the time of the reflash, I can't be sure if it was the reflash or the fuel change that made the big difference...

Good luck!

Just completed break in myself and have had no sputtering or oil issues. Oil level is still where it was before - just a tiny bit under totally full. I'd be concerned about that much oil consumption in just 500 or so miles. What's the dealer say?

I spoke to my dealer this morning. They do acknowledge seeing this. Their recommendation is if it happens again to bring it in and they'll do a deep dive - otherwise unlikely it will happen again based on their experience. Since I'm at the start of my warranty and what I've read here about the infrequency of this, I'm ok with waiting.

Regarding oil consumption. I believe this is normal during break-in. So far I've used about 1/2 quart for the first 500mi. I believe this is in range.

I have only had my car (06 C2S) for a week and just filled up the tank yesterday for the first time. The gauge had gotten down to 1/4 and the engine started sputtering, it quit immediately after adding some gas. Either there is some crud in my tank, the gauge is way off, or the pickup is high enough that the car will start to starve at 1/4 tank. Will see what the dealer says.
