Default clutch issue?

'05 - 997 with 20k

I have begun to notice that when releasing the clutch in 1st from a stop there is a higher pitched "ERRR" or "HOOT" sound (0.5-1 sec) just before clutch is full released. I don't hear it going to other gears and it doesn't happen at every start up. Any ideas? In for yearly service next week and will have checked out, but like to have an idea before I get there.

Yeah...it happens to me too. In my case it sounds like a slipping belt but comes form the clutch / transmission. It does not happen all the times but maybe 2 out ten times and it's more profound if I'm taking off on an inclined surface. Other than that the clutch works beautifully and it does not slip. I'm curious what your service guy has to say.

Uh oh... I had the same problem... see https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/300152-a-sad-ending-lesson-learned.html

Your service person will most likely tell you that he has to open the tranny to inspect the clutch plates and flywheel. Good luck.

Interesting info, but in my case the clutch has never been abused. The car is a '06 C2S Cab with 12k miles on it. I bought the car brand new with 7 miles on it and I'm the only one driving it. I've always owned stick shift cars and owned 6 Porsches in the past. I've never had to change a clutch yet, so if that is what my problem is, then definitely NOT from abuse, but how can one prove it?

Thanks all for the input. Will post an update next week. My car was bought off the lot with 120 miles on it. In my hands, I have not knowingly over-rev'ed. Have taken her to 7000 rpm a couple of times, but not beyond.

It does have a belt-like sound or friction rub and is definitely from the engine area. The past couple of days has been quiet. So likely will be quiet when I visit the dealer as well.

I had the same problem, starting at about 3,000 miles. I have a 2006 C2, delivered in May of last year. Apparently, during that time frame, a number of cars had improperly torqued flywheel bolts. The dealership was able to hear the same thing that I heard, opened up the car and replaced the (now warped) flywheel. All under warranty. Supposedly this has also happened on the Cayman.

Make sure to press the dealer if they don't hear the sound. One dealer told me that everything was fine because they didn't do a ride along. Car is back now and everything is great. Good luck and let us know that everything worked out.

Hey all,

Dealer could not replicate noise so lubed pedal linkages, etc. Two weeks ago I was hearing on 50% of start up from stop. Over the weekend it did seem to disappear. Don't know if weather played a factor (now hitting 80F) or what. Hopefully a non-issue but I will keep an ear out for it again.

Dealer experience overall was less than stellar, but that's another story.

Most likely it will happen again, but at least you documented it early. Good luck, and don't keep us in suspense too long!

I had the same experience. Intermittent noise, sometimes much worse than others. Until they replicate, you will have a difficult time getting them to open her up. However, you will learn a lot about your dealer. I ended up switching dealerships because of the way I was treated.

Try a slow, slightly uphill start. Easing off the clutch will increase the likelihood of the noise. I had good days and bad days, but the problem was worst when dealing with slow starts in traffic. I'll bet that you have the same problem.

Unhappy replacement?

so did they replace the pressure plate? or the entire clutch assembly, etc.? I have an 06 S with 2K miles - heard the "hoot" / "howl" for the 1st time this weekend - only when from a stop shifting into 1st. Sounds familiar...

I had the problem at 4000 miles. Dealer replaced the clutch.
