2s vs 4s cabriolet

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I had to ask those who say RWD is better.
Isn't the top dog 997 Turbo also a AWD. But I don't think I ever heard any Turbo owners complaining about the their AWD. If RWD's are better & more fun, then why wouldn't they make the Turbo's RWD, or at least making them both AWD and RWD? Hmmmm...

The TT is awd, but the real track cars (GT3 & GT3RS) are rwd. And the new GT2 is also rwd. I suspect if you went over to the TT forum you would find some complaints about awd and understeer. Each to his own.

That would be called the GT2.

I know everyone thinks they are Michael Schumacher and that a C4 will slow them to the point they will be passed by a one-legged man on a Huffy, but the fact is that any of these cars are far more capable than 99% of those that drive them. I drive the car in the winter and that was the primary reason for buying a C4. Plus, the big hips look sooo much nicer (to me). At the end of the day, you will be happy with either, so get what you prefer.

I tested a 996TT, a 996 and a 997 C2 when I was looking. I LOVED the power of the Turbo but hated the heavy feeling, the understeer and the weight of the car.
I know of a number of enthusiastic track guys who bought 996 TTs only to get rid of them and go back to RWD.
Learn to drive the C2S properly and take advantage of the 911s weight distribution and you will have a smile a mile wide. It is a remarkable car. I don't see a need for AWD unless you're driving it year round in the snow. Even then, a good set of winters go a long way ... or just buy a winter car.

I think at least 75% of the people who drive these cars wouldnt be able to tell the difference. I would get the rwd because its cheaper (unless you really like the wide hips). I really wanted a Targa so i was "stuck" with the awd but i have no complaints. I have driven a c2, c2s and my targa on the track and difference is minimal for novice to average drivers. You clearly have no "wrong" choice here.

I'm going out on a limb here but am guessing that you're perhaps in your 30s. Porsche used to only make the 930 turbo in RWD until they found that the vast numbers of buyers were not really competent drivers and Porsche wound up having to put AWD into them because of their excessive power and handling querks. Personally, I do not consider the "997 turbo" to be the "top dog." This is merely a marketing tool by Porsche to extract more money from status seekers. In truth, most Porsche owners would actually be better off in a 997 or 997S than a AWD turbo. These are incredible automobiles as they are produced and certainly don't need an extra 100 hp and then 2 more wheels driven to reel them in.

JJ,
I thought this thread looked familiar. Had doubts when started the thread. Picked up cab last week in June and have enjoyed the heck out of this 2s cab. "Does it rain in H-town?" You bet, but haven't lost it yet.
Love this car. I don't want it any heavier.

Me too. Love my 05 C2S Cab that I picked up last June. I think the narrow body cabs look just as sexy as the wide body cabs, and are much lighter. The wide bodies are less than an inch on each side wider at rear. And the C4S cab is the heaviest of the bunch, including Targa 4S, and has less room in the "trunk".

AWD = Placebo
I suspect you're right. Take the badges off the back and ask the question "rwd or awd?" and many couldn't tell you. AWD = placebo. People buy it because they're scared of the idea of not being able to control a rwd 911, not because they actually can't. A track day and a wet skid pan and they would soon get it. Even in snow or heavy rain you really don't need awd if you have the right tires and the right approach.
