ben - i believe it is the water pump... look at your picture, flip the pump over and it mounts to the engine...

the thick hose attaches to that inlet on the water pump.... thats where i saw a few leaks from my old 996.

You may be right but it sure doesn't look like that in Dan's pics in his first post. I'm having a difficult time seeing where the belt pulley might be. Oh well, hopefully he'll get to the bottom of this.
Curious minds want to know.

Just follow the hose - you don't get many of the large coolant hoses on the engine, and there's absolutely going to be a feed to the pump.

Could be as simple as a poor connection to the pump - bad pump interface to engine - bad pump itself.

Either way, the dealership needs to do better than the twisted cap brush-off, as it appears to be getting worse.

So as it's actively dripping, it's time to pull it and get a replacement bearing seal pressed in?

If so, what does that say for his dealership's technical staff? They probably never put it on a rack to examine it.

Hey Dan, remind me not to take my car in to where you get yours serviced.

Thanks guys. I'm sort of interested in seeing how the dealership (SB Auto Group) handle it. I happen to know a lot about older Porsches and not the wet ones, so to quickly dismiss this as a crooked coolant cap doesn't pass my sanity test. I looked at the maintenance procedures (thanks , Ben) and find that their troubleshooting guidance is pretty vague, and unless done by a smart guy, may not be thorough. Fortunately, well inside the warranty.

it says nothing as the coolant cap could have been crooked, low coolant made the water pump over heat and smoked the seal, i wasnt there you werent there, so we will neevr know for sure but i would definatly say by the pictures that its the water pump leaking

I hear what you're saying, but the fact remains that coolant is greenish in color, and there is no evidence of any of it anywhere leaking. All that we can see in the pics, and all that Dan is reporting, is the fact that pinkish thick liquid is seeping out from somewhere. If it was indeed a faulty water pump then greenish coolant would be leaking through the weep hole and onto the garage floor. But there is no evidence of that, according to Dan.

He only has close to 9k miles on the car. I can't see a water pump on a Porsche going out in less than 9k miles. I would hope they're good for at least 100k miles.

I still think the problem is with the gasket not sealing properly - for whatever reason - thus causing coolant to seep out gradually, dissolving the red gasket cement as it does and creating this pinkish thick goo.

Step right up and place your bets, gentlemen. My money's on the failed gasket.

Here's a pic of my coolant fill reservoir on the left with the blue cap, and sure as **** it's frickin pink! You learn sumthin new everyday!

Well, I only had a nickle riding on the bet anyway.
