What's the story on this car?

What happens is that somehow they hack into the original ad, change the price and the "click here to email seller" However this is not the original seller. So all the feedback, ratings, etc are authentic. They lower the price to entice someone to quickly send the "seller" a deposit. I have very good info on this, and Ebay does not take action too swiftly imo. Stay away

BElow is the email response I receved from the 'seller'. Looks like a scam. The deal is registered through eBay and they hold and insure the money???

Hello there,
I appreciate your interest in my vehicle. The car is located in South
Carolina.I am selling it under market value as I need the funds for a
major
investement.
The Buy It Now price is $44,700 as stated in the auction listing. The
shipping/handling fees will vary depending on your location and will be
covered by the buyer. You will inspect the car before the payment will
be
made.
I will only deal through Ebay for our own protection, they will hold
and
insure your money until receipt of the car in good condition. The
inspection
period is starting from the day you will receive the car.You will have
15
days to inspect the car and finish the transaction.
The vehicle is registered and has a clear title. The car is in showroom
conditions inside and out. There are no dimples, dents or scratches of
any
kind, normal usage.Exterior and interior is in a very good shape. The car
drives and looks brand new and has an incident free history.
If you wish to purchase it you must provide me with your full name and
address so I can register the deal with Ebay.
Please forward any questions about the car or the transaction and I'll
reply
in a timely fashion. I hope we can do business.
Regards,
Cheryl Logorda

A few weeks ago, I was on ebay looking for a '59 Corvette, when I saw one with matching numbers with a buy it now price of $20,000. Comparable models with matching numbers had a buy it now price in excess of $200,000. When I sent an email via "ask the seller a question", I received a virtually identical response as the one 4thporsche received, except that the car supposedly was located in the UK. May be the same person.

I reported this sale to eBay and they will be taking it down soon. There are several clues usually to such scams:
(1) It's a stolen account that was, perhaps, inactive for some time.
(2) If no inactive, any feedbacks are on completely unrelated stuff, like $1 postcards or really cheap junk,--just to get the feedback numbers up. The feedback numbers will be few,--comparatively. Lots of feedback accounts rarely are stolen,--those ebayers stay up on their accounts.
(3) Usually they are a 3-day listing. Get in, get out quick before eBay shuts them down.
(4) Always something high dollar,--and then they want Western Union, or something equally untraceable. Include PayPal in there as well,--can be stolen PayPal accounts as well.
(5) Always ask you to send your questions to an email address they have embedding within the description. The last thing they want is the real account holder to see message traffic going to him when he doesn't think he has any listings.
Report them to Ebay's Safe Harbor.

If anyone is serious (4thporsche), find out where the car is in SC and I'll see if I can get it checked out. Judging from the pictures on the eBay listing, as well as the nav display, it appears to be on the coast.

I think you're right in that these people must look for 'inactive' ebayers - I wonder how they get access to their accounts though (trying random passwords???).

How do they get passwords? They use pfishing in some cases. I've received twice in the past 4 weeks an email that looks totally real, someone wanting information on an item I had listed. --Except the link is to a bogus site. You can tell these are fake sites because the crucial link to respond to is not an ebay site. You have to start off from a suspicious perspective because they basically have duplicated a typical ebay email enquiry. It even has the legitimate links about fraud on it!! So, an unsuspecting person can easily provide their ebay password. I forwarded it on to ebay...

Ha Ha.... Ok, my good buddy Cheryl doesn't want to cooperate... I bet she's in Nigeria, not Frankfurt (see below)! Surprised eBay hasn't pulled the listing by now.

Hello again ,
I am sorry but I cannot comply with your request of inspecting the
car.You are the fourth person that asked me this question. It is rather
hard
to answer to this kind of request as it involves time and money
spending
(especially time which now is very important to me).
As it is I am away with business in Frankfurt , Germany and I cannot
take any calls. The car is already relocated at a local company with
whom
eBay has
established a colaboration contract. So the car is already crated and
ready
to be shipped as soon as the transaction is registered.
I will require the payment through eBay and after they will confirm
that, I will then establish you as a definite buyer and I will go ahead
with
the shipping.
Look how this works:
1. I will contact eBay and give all the info about this deal.
2. They will email us the forms which are needed for our deal.
3. I will send the car to your location and you will send the money at
eBay.
4. After you will inspect the car and decide to keep it, eBay will
forward the funds .
5. You must provide me your contact details: full name and address,so I
can initiate the transaction through eBay.
If by any reason the car is not as described, or if you find any
problems with it I will pay for the returning fees. I'm sure it won't
be
the case because it's a state of art looking and working vehicle.
I apologize for this inconvenience and I hope you will understand why I
am conducting the deal in this manner.
Waiting for your reply.
Regards,
Cheryl
