How to remove brake reservoir screen
In preparation for my first brake flush on this car, I was inspecting the screen filter, trying to decide how best to remove it. I know all the DIY comments refer to giving it a twist with needle nose pliers, which I tried. Given the way the reservoir is mounted to the master cylinder, and, that you can't get to it to support it while tugging on the screen, I was reluctant to use too much pressure. I have considered using a wire cutter and making one or two small cuts at the top of the filter, which should make it easier to remove. Any suggestions?

On my 01 996 Turbo, the screen lifted out easily; on my 02 Boxster S it didn't, so I never forced things and just hooked up the Motive Power Bleeder with it in place; haven't done my 997 S yet, so I don't know, but same answer. It it doesn't easily come out, I will just hook up the bleeder with it in place (hurts nothing).
Sorry, but I humbly disagree.

Well, I went in the garage tonight prepared to do battle with the screen filter. And, it popped right out! I pushed the needle-nose pliers down a bit deeper, and turned the whole filter just a bit, and it came right out. It's cold tonight, so I haven't taken the time to look at it closely, but it is probably made to come out when turned to a certain point.
I flushed my M3 brakes with the screen in place; never could get the thing out. I can't see that it would do any harm, but I had rather have it out.
