Default Subwoofer in 997 S Cab

Before I tear apart my wifes new car, I thought I'd get some input on installing a new sub w/amp behind the rear seats. The car does NOT have the Bose upgrade, and the basic stereo seems adequate for most driving in a cab, but it needs a little "bottom". Thinking of a pair of 5" Focal Subs, (or simnilar) with a small amp just for the subs.
Question is.... Is there adequate room behind the rear seat panel to install the subs and amp? I'm having XM (commander) with modulator ) installed and the car will be in the shop for a while anyway. Just loking for some direction to point the audio guys. Ive searched the threads but found only refs to the Bose system, or big megabuck stuff.
Thanks in advance.

You might consider building a box that replicates the dims of the Bose box and fits in the std Bose location. I don't know if you're going to be able to get proper volumes for the Focal in the back side speaker locations.

That being said, if there is space, you'll have to have someone lay-up pods for the spaces. The Focals I have seen will not be happy in a free-air installation.

How about removing the useless rear seats and building some custom boxes that fit it those spaces?

Just my 0.02 USD,

I had my mechanics take a look back there to see if they could instaill a latch like system for my twins car seats. Does not look like there is alot of room to do much.

I would suggest... Before you, mod for the subwoofer upgrade first try changing the bass & mid range levels and move small increments of rear speaker balance. Sometimes it takes a couple of settings before you reach an acceptable level of satisfaction. Also, if you do not reach a satisfactory woofer level try taking the mid range at a lower level to highlight the bottom deep sounds.

Yeah, but in the cab he's going to be short on bass regardless of settings w/o a dedicated sub...

Yes, noted that but levels of satisfaction is one of preference... first it is worth for him to try and tweak the sound system to come close to that satisfactory level that he is looking forward to hearing. He did not mention playing with the sound system in order to achieve deeper sound settings. If the settings do not work for him, my first move would be to change the speakers that will provide the deep range or sub-woofer box. I have seen a custom-built sub-woofer box that sits on the rear passenger foot well (removable). Any good custom stereo shop can make the box from scratch. Probably need RCA jacks from the stereo system into a dedicated amp and out to the subwoofer. ALL is doable with a reputable stereo installation shop.

It took me a while of tweaking my base stereo before I liked the sound. The car was pre-set with "Loudness" on and it was terrible. With patience, as suggested above, you can tweak with minor increments until the sound is pretty good. Then again, I only listen to the CD player on highway trips - never want to drown out the mechanical music when shifting around town. And you have a cab - perfect to not use the stereo

Good information, and some interesting thread links. I think the mega system is simply too much, and the stock system is too little. Possiply the best bet is to replace the existing drivers, and see about a sub for the rear floor area. That idea sounds promising.

I found this guy on the web. He offers a few different subwoofer arrangements.

This is the link that points to 1999 onwards subs.
http://www.caraudioinnovations.com/porsche996sub.htm
Seems like a good idea. Although the first solution in the footwels seems to take too much space if anyone uses the rear seats (I know my boys are quite happy there... but they'd hate the thought of the sub bozes in the footwels). The other solution in the rear deck seems better. And 4x5inch subs should sound ok... And would match the space.

Definitrly go full custom enclosure, no free air... and I would to the amp up front since the car will be int he shop anyway. You'll miss quite some space which is crucial to the subs in the back if you added the amp there.

You will also need some converter from the high speaker singal to convert to low amp signal. A search I had done recently had yielded a product by JL Audio I believe, which I plan to use when I do the stereo upgrade (non bose here either). Relevant info here, needs some research to figure out which product is for you: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_c...php?page_id=94

I would also upgrade speakers.... The facotry ones are really poor construction and although they sound adequate, I think an upgrade would make a world of a difference. Thus, the setup I would have in mind, for a relatively down to earth system would be a 4x50 amp, 2 channels to work the fronts, and 2 channels for the sub, fading between the two, and the rear speakers would be run with the stock headunit amp, after cutting off some low frequencies with a low pass passive crossover (I would think 100hz cuttoff would be just fine).

For sub alternatives, I would look at a 8-10 inch sub again by JL audio which I believe is set to play in a 1 cubic foot enclosure, which is quite small and we may acutally have it in the stock location on the rear deck...
For enclosure of less then 1 cu ft here
For enclosure at 1.13 cu ft here
And if these are too large (havent done my homework yet on these the project is a bit further down for me) there is this option here which has some 6.5 inch subs which play in tiny enclosures.

There is no doubt that once you go sub, you cant go back, regardless of the amount of tweaking you do in a stock system. I wonder if the dealer would sell the enclosure of the bose system and how much it would cost, and if one could swap the drivers. I remember reading that the Bose enclosure has one sub and two passive radiators, so it will be quite hard to swap drivers out and leave no holes. Plus its a ported enclosure...

Good luck in the project pls keep us posted, and if you go ahead try to post some pics...
