Default A Pragmatist's Pessimistic Question

So...If I want my business idea to fly I may need to sell my Porsche and use the cash for the business. If that happens I will need to buy something to tie me over.

What is the cheapest car available out there that will give me the maximum Porsche-like thrills for the minimum $? And of course it doesn't have to be new.

Any suggestions for the potentially "nouveau pauvre"?

Why sell the Car? If car paid in full, borrow against it thru a bank or financial services. The car price will take a hit when you sell. If refinance, it may fetch 100% of blue book value. Interest rate maybe high, in some places. It's worth a look. JMHO

Most sports car thrills for the dollar (considering purchase and maintenance)? Used Miata.

Most Porsche-like thrills for the dollar? Used early Boxster.

My choice if I needed to cut back right now? Used Mini Cooper S.

FYI.

Car is not paid off.

The Audi went when the lease ended.

Practical budget $20K inc. taxes.

How about hitting us with your business idea - - we might be able to save you more money/time than any car deal you could make.

Actually, I'm kind of serious here. There's got to be signficant business know-how out here in Renn-land - - despite/because of our "unique" obsession.

If nothing else, how about your "elevator pitch"??

At least consider me as having signed an NDA!

I'm writing this not as a P-car owner (I don't own one yet) but as someone who has bootstrapped a growing business and survived for 5+ years. I even know what cash flow is now. (Some of you may understand the painfully humility with which I wrote the previous sentence.)

There are many "impolite" questions I'd want to ask. But I'll ask just two polite ones. One, what is the nature of the business you are starting? Two, how much is owning your 997S cab important to your recreational life? Is it just a cool car to you, or is this THE hobby that excites you?

If your Porsche is a big part of your life- and that is certainly reasonable- I'd avoid getting rid of it unless you absolutely have to. Selling it costs time, not to mention the depreciation hit. Buying a replacement costs time and money, including registration, inspection, and all that. Then you get to do that all over again when you feel you can own a Porsche again. Time is money, and all that adds up. Plus you would miss a great source of recreation, something whose importance cannot be overstated. In fact, even if the car is not all-important to you, I'd still be biased towards saving time and money with "the status quo".

Instead, think of how else you can get the money/financing you need. This is where you can really get creative. And a good drive is a nice way to get ideas.

You know your own circumstances best and it may be that downsizing is the best option. If you do decide to downsize, I'd really go for dirt-cheap but just fun enough to tie you over. Like a used Miata that requires very little cash outlay and maintenance. If you are going to liquidate your Porsche for cash, you might as well keep as much of that cash around as possible. In business, cash is like blood in a body and oil in an engine.

I hope everyone doesn't mind me pontificating. I did think about your question before responding.

Most important- I wish you the best of luck!!!!!

(For those of you who wonder why I do not yet own a Porsche- I guess it's part discipline and part wanting to "complete just one or two more milestones." I'm dangling a 997 Targa in front of me like a carrot on a string. I hope people don't mind my occasional visits to this forum. It's good motivation for me.)
