If I'm jacking up the car at the one-and-only jack point, how do I get a jack stand under the jack point?
Are there other places on a 997 where one can put a jack stand? Or other places one can jack the car so that you can put a stand under the jack point?

There are four jack points on the 997. They are immediately aft of the front wheels or immediately forward of the rears. Absolutely NEVER jack it by the center of the engine!
Recommend that you pick up a couple of hockey pucks (about 99$ each) to put between the jack pad and the car,--will keep from tearing up the undercoat.

But how do you remove the jack, all the while keeping the car raised, and then place a jack stand under the jack point?
I need to remove both rear wheels at once so I can bring them both to the tire shop for new rubber.

With my Audi S4 I was able to jack up the whole driver or passenger side of the car by jacking up just the front or rear. That way if you jack up the front of the car the rear should also lift allowing you to put the jack stand under it. Just raise the car enough to get the tires off. If you raise it too much you may have a little trouble getting it down (ie. you have have to put two pucks on the jack pad to get the car just a little higher to release the pressure on the jack stands). I would guess you'll also need jack stands with a flat pad and not the typical "V" style.

With any 911 Porsche, it also helps to have jack stands that are shorter in length than standard jack stands. Snap On Tools sells a beautiful set on their website. I have them and love them.

As a current shopper for a 997, and my first Porsche, I am interested by this thread. And similar to some others, it seems Porsche is a different animal in some ways; not sure yet how I feel about some of this. Anyway, regarding the jackstand thing. I can hardly believe there is not a single front and rear jack point, with which one can raise either end, and then place the stands. I realize the car is low, but with other cars, I have always been able to drive onto four, low ramps (3 levels of 2" dressed board, or about 5" high), and then jack from a central point at each end. Is there not a similar method available with the 911?

From the very beginnings of the 911 the cars have a very similar jacking system to the VW Beetles. Perhaps it's due to the monocoque construction, but I have dealt with this since the 1970s and have adapted to them. It's no big deal.
