First, sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but this is my first 6 speed car. A co-worker has a 996 and told me that his clutch was being replaced (at BH Porsche) and that you have to do it every 15,000 miles with "these cars." Grand total was $2,100. I just emailed him again to confirm that I didn't misunderstand him (I didn't). He seems to think that you have to replace the clutch every 15,000 miles and told me I better go have mine checked (just hit 16,000 miles). This is nuts, right? My car drives perfectly.

I have 20,800 miles and my clutch is fine - just had the 20k service completed, so the dealer has seen it. Sidebar: Does BH Porsche also service Galardos?

Rest assured your car is fine and may not ever need a new clutch for as long as you own it. I'm sure there's published information on the normal life expectancy of the clutch. I wouldn't be surprised if it's close to 100k, 200k miles. But I would be really surprised if it's less than 50k.

I can see where if he abuses his clutch and prematurely wears it out that it might need frequent replacement. But I can't see you doing that, right?

I think your friend doesn't know how to drive a manual transmission very well. I just got my car back from the dealer for an RMS/IMS seal replacement (under warranty) and the original clutch with 32,875 mi (52,600 Kms) is still at almost 70% of remaining material.
BTW: I asked them to look at it while they were in there and I was ready to put a new clutch on if it was down below 40%

Since there are a lot of new to Porsche owners out there we need to set the record straight. The Porsche is not to be used as a sprint car or a dragster. If driven reasonably you should easily get over 100,000 miles on a clutch. Easily. If you can't get 100,000 miles on a clutch then you need to go learn how to drive a manual transmission automobile.

I've had two 996's that were daily drivers in New York City with over 50k miles on them when I traded them in and no clutch problems whatsoever.
