Default Weight of wheels

I have a 997S with the standard "lobster claw" wheels and have seen a number of sellers claiming that the Sport Design Wheels are "very light weight". Does any one know what the weight of each wheel (without tires)?

Wheel Enhancement has detailed info on all OEM wheels (as well as top quality aftermarket).

The "Lobster Claws" are the lightest of the Porsche OEM 19 inch wheels.

That claim also appeared in a couple of magazines. Also false. Do a search within the Rennlist archives and you should also find out some tire weight information as well.

There is no significant difference between the weights of the various oem wheels (the wider wheels are somewhat heavier of course). You have to go aftermarket (forged) to reduce weight and that is not cheap. 6 lbs per wheel is usually given as the minimum reduction necessary for a perceptible improvement in unsprung weight.

Default Thanks for the info guys (and girls if applicable)

I like the look of the Sport Design and thought it would an added bonus if they were lighter then the claws.

I have no plans to race this car (at least not seriously, maybe fun days on the track).

Thanks again for the info.

Just to finish the thought, Ed, you do not need to race the car to feel improvements in lowering unsprung weight. Taking 30 lbs off wheels and rotors in my M dramatically improved initial turn-in and throttle response and somewhat helped suspension compliance to road chop. Just so expensive to do with Porsche

Did some quick research - my BBS wheels are 21lbs front and 24lbs rear.

Porsche's wheels are very light for OEM...

Yes they are, Chris. To get much lighter, you'd have to go to the Kinesis or the like... and that's big $$$.

My car has the Sport Designs, and I picked up a pair of take-off Lobster Forks from Wheel Enhancement for my snows. I'm impressed with the low weight overall - my Sport Design front rims + tires are lighter than the smaller / narrower BMW Style 70 alloys + tires on my 7er.

OTOH, would I like to have a set of the Kinesis F110s? Oh, hell yes... but I'm stashing that cash for the Ruf/ASA supercharger install.
