Question Am I Stuck with this Display?

I read the manual, but don't understand why only one of my FM pre-sets shows the station letters. The others have the odd designations shown on the attached picture. Although most of these stations stream text on the main screen. What do these designations mean? Thanks.

I can't figure this out either. Had the car two years now and finally cracked open the manual last night...even after disabling all of the radio station 'features', I still have the weird station displays as you've pictured.

My understanding is that the PCM will will display the call letters of the radio station if they are transmitted by the station. But, if the station transmits more than four characters, the PCM will designate each station as "L-A", "L-B", etc. I forget why they use "L", but I think it means something in German. In your photo, preset 9 is apparently transmitting "LARGEST" and since this won't fit in the space allocated, the PCM designates it as an "L" station and assigns the next available letter, in this case "M" and displays "L-M".

Tom...while you may be absolutely correct, it doesn't make any sense to me. Why not default to frequency? How could 'L-A', 'L-B', 'L-M' etc. be of any possible use to anybody, German or otherwise? I don't have mine in front of me, but it's display is an even more random array of letters and numbers that don't give any indication of the radio station.

Regardless, I'd like the display to show frequencies, and the PCM manual does indicate this is possible...but I couldn't get it to work.

I've read and reread the manual and tried various settings...and I can't figure this out either.

I don't think this is a problem in Europe. My screen shows BBC1, BBC2, etc. Probably the US radio stations don't put out the data in a way compatible with European cars. I would happily settle for the huge choice of FM stations you guys enjoy in the US thn the stuff that gets broadcast over here.

Alan ... I certainly am not defending the system, I'm just saying that is how it works. It doesn't make much sense to me either. I don't have the car or the manual in front of me, but I think there may be a toggle to turn RDS off. I think if you do that, then only frequencies would be displayed.

I'm too lazy to take a picture and upload it here, but here are some examples: Station frequency 106.7, call letters KROQ, does not stream data, and shows up as '167' on the display. Station frequency 105.9, call letters KPWR, shows up as 'P10'. Station frequency 104.3 shows up as '104.3'. Baffles me.

Thanks for the input. What an odd display. It's particularly interesting that the letters aren't even in order! These are great cars, but definitely are quirky.
