I just made this write up on my experience driving a tip at HPDE.

That's a nice write up. The throttle jab shift I practiced for a few hours before hitting the Ring. I found it to be more demanding because of the timing issues than driving in M and shifting from the rockers.

The original question being is there that much difference in performance. I'm no expert, but it's my understanding that the big difference off the line is you can "launch" with manual much better than you can with a tip. I also understand there is more power transfer loss due to the auto tranny (again, not being technical...)

If you have that tough a commute, why get a 997? As others have said, use a comfortable commuter car days and then get a 997 manual for evenings, weekends, and track use.

Ron, you are correct! Although I have a Tip in my 997S it is only because I have to due to my prosthetic leg and I can not press a clutch pedal. In the past I had 6 speeds in my other Prosche and Vette's and they do launch better (if you are good with a clutch) and are more fun to drive in a spirited way. I am just happy Porsche has the Tiptronic so that I can experiance a Porsche and have some fun on track days.

Still much more interesting than the babyseat or iPod debates.
