yep we see just as many 997s with stolen lights as 996s, the goodnews is with the 997s the y usually dont do any body damage stealing them bad news is its still gonna cost 3000 to have them replaced

Porsche is not to blame for the design; all Porsche parts are expensive, so there will always be a healthy 'second-hand' market for them.

hi alan,
i do agree, but aren't ALL parts designed and produced with the "ease of production, ease of retrofit, and ease of repair in the event of an accident" in mind? sure they are. but it doesn't mean they should be easy to steal.
the easy theft of 996 headlights was/is widely known, and i think porsche should have taken this into consideration when doing the 997 re-design.
if "porsche isn't to blame for the design" of a porsche, who is?
i really don't have a dog in this fight as i don't own a 996. yet. but i saw the 997 with the two holes where headlights should be and thought that the problem should have been dealt with when the 997 was designed.
living in s. florida, however, has taken litronics off my 'must-have' list when 996 shopping. sad, but true.

I just don't see how the manufacturer can be to blame for a healthy parts black market (other than pricing parts so high that they inadvertently created it). If you could sell a set of Kia Amati xenons for $40 or a set of 997 xenons for $200, which would you steal? A set of Buick LaCrosse alloys for $40 or a set of 997S alloys for $200?

then i must have been very unfortunate since this has happened to me 3 times...only one in the 997. I know (from talking to the repair shop) that is something not unusual in Miami...very annoying to think that they make $200 on eBay and they cause $5k in damage

Out of sheer curiousity, what makes the 996/997 lights so easy to steal? On the 993, the lights only come out after a lever arrangment has been moved in the trunk.
