are the 997's suffering the same litronic-theft problems that the 996's did?

wow - shame on porsche for not fixing that when they moved to the 997 headlight design.

I'm no expert on headlight design, but I assume the xenons are all one piece for ease of production, ease of retrofit, and ease of repair in the event of an accident. An unfortunate side effect is ease of theft.

Porsche is not to blame for the design; all Porsche parts are expensive, so there will always be a healthy 'second-hand' market for them.

hi alan,
i do agree, but aren't ALL parts designed and produced with the "ease of production, ease of retrofit, and ease of repair in the event of an accident" in mind? sure they are. but it doesn't mean they should be easy to steal.

the easy theft of 996 headlights was/is widely known, and i think porsche should have taken this into consideration when doing the 997 re-design.

if "porsche isn't to blame for the design" of a porsche, who is?

i really don't have a dog in this fight as i don't own a 996. yet. but i saw the 997 with the two holes where headlights should be and thought that the problem should have been dealt with when the 997 was designed.

living in s. florida, however, has taken litronics off my 'must-have' list when 996 shopping. sad, but true.

Doesn't concern me, either, as I didn't opt for xenons on my 997. But I did have the side-view mirrors taken off my 911SC many years ago, a similar phenomenon.

I just don't see how the manufacturer can be to blame for a healthy parts black market (other than pricing parts so high that they inadvertently created it). If you could sell a set of Kia Amati xenons for $40 or a set of 997 xenons for $200, which would you steal? A set of Buick LaCrosse alloys for $40 or a set of 997S alloys for $200?

I see more 997s on my 2.5 mile commute through Coral Gables than I see VWs, and I've only seen one with a missing headlight. Granted, 997 guys aren't the type to roll around sans headlights, but given the proliferation of 997s and 996s (not to mention 986s and 987s) around here, I don't think the problem is quite as widespread as people like to say it is.

then i must have been very unfortunate since this has happened to me 3 times...only one in the 997. I know (from talking to the repair shop) that is something not unusual in Miami...very annoying to think that they make $200 on eBay and they cause $5k in damage

Out of sheer curiousity, what makes the 996/997 lights so easy to steal? On the 993, the lights only come out after a lever arrangment has been moved in the trunk.
