Default Curious about avitars and 'listings'....??

This may be OT ... but, I'm posting it here because I'm interested in the response. But, it could be moved.

Often, when I read a thread ... people post a response and then have this 6 inch deal running below the response. It usually has a photog or 2 and a list.

The list contains a myriad of vehicles that the poster person has owned, does own and will own. The list includes his/her cars, the spouse's vehicles, the children's vehicles, the parents vehicles, the au pair's ride, the care taker's pickup truck, any ATVs, motorcycles, or water craft that the family has, and what lawn tractors the landscaper has.

Why is this? I don't understand. Are we to be impressed, diminished, embarrassed, pissed off, or what? Is anyone really interested on a Porsche message board, that I once owned a '39 Ford street rod (sold)? Or a '57 Chevy Bel Air(blown up)? I doubt it.

Someone has got to let me know why this type of avitar posting exists? I'm not trying to irritate anyone, but I'd like to know why this phenomenon exists on this and other message boards. Wonder if this exists on sextoytalk.com?? I won't check, tho.

Good post, Baggerdude. I suppose the idea is to know more about a person and their interests as they relate to other vehicles, but some folks do get carried away. Personally, I try to remain as annonymous as possible...

Guess I am guilty on this one, but only to some. Lots of us enjoy sharing on the forum, it's all about our cars and toys. Where else can you enjoy the comaraderie of the car hobby? So the forums have become a fun place to show and tell.

It's all in good fun for most of us because we all love the cars. Heck, why not join in and have some fun?

About the avatars...I like the pictures of some of the non-Porsche items.

Hey, Mastiffdog....

I can understand wanting to share and relate and have something in common with other folks, but why not have that in the "personal profile" area? So, one can have a crap load of photogs of various cars, toys, family, friends, eateries, vacations and such listed. "See my web page" could be in the avitar, eh.

I've seen personal web pages listed in such areas, too. Folks have all kinds of things on them .... but, they don't have a list of every vehicle ever owned at the end of their postings.

Hey, I don't care. It's harmless and .... ahhh, I guess .... curious. Seems pretty pervasive, too.

BTW, I have 2 Husqvarna chain saws and a Sears 18 hp lawn tractor (stock).

rhetorical question.
perhaps a better question would be to ask yourself why
it irritates you enough to post about the practice?

I just list my Porsche's, because it's relevant to the site.

And unless I'm seeing things, I notice you do too... hmm.

Well, here's something that might irritate you.

First of all, you're mistaken. It's called an avatar, not avitar. And the avatar is the pic below your username.

The signature, which is what you're really referring to, is where users attach pics and a sundry list of whatever it is they wish to list.

Yes, some of them can be quite tedious, as they take up half a page or more when scrolling. But if there happens to be one in particular that annoys you, just have the ***** to tell the user that maybe it would serve the community better if he trimmed it down a bit, as I have done on several occasions.

Often times new conversations get started based upon the stuff in the signature file. If I'm not mistaken, there is a setting where you can turn these off.

Another reason for the signature file is that if you put your name in it, then you don't have to write it every time. Or I guess you could put it in your signature file and still write it every time.....

Thanx, Ben, for the information.... guess you are still searching for intelligent life, eh.

I have less lofty aspirations.

I was just curious. And, no .... you didn't irritate me with all your knowledge. I've run into folks like you many times. (yawn...)
