Bagger, I have two Pcar's very close to what your thinking about.
1) 1997 993 Carrera 2S
2) 2007 997 Turbo
-neither is my daily driver

- I also know a few other Pcar owners that have both a 993 and a 996 or 997.
Here is the reason, the 993 is an amazing, fun car to drive (if not the most fun of all the 911's) - but is also, "work" to drive. Generally it does not have creature comforts and requires the driver to be "engaged" during the entire drive experience.
The 996 and 997 are a bit more user friendly. You need not "work" as hard behind the wheel.

My 993 has become my track car (which I share with my brother) and the Turbo and has become my weekend/nice weather driver.

-- I do understand your issues with the new M5. Despite it's amazing power, etc. It just lost "something" the old ones used to have.

- So maybe because your 993 is a C4S (awd) maybe if you get a second Pcar, why not consider a C2S instead. Do you need all your cars to be awd?
You could also just buy out your M5 and keep it until BMW rolls out the new X6 with V8 Bi-Turbo engine. That thing will be awesome and will also be a SUV/CAR type hybrid.

Btw, my daily driver is an X5 4.8is. 360hp, tight suspension.. I LOVE IT..

I have a 1995 993 Cab w/22,000 miles and a new 2007 C4S Cab. I went through the same thought and decided to keep the 993.

I love the 2 p-car approach with my Cayenne and 997 cab. The Cayenne is the perfect winter car here in Wisconsin. I'm getting the bug to upgrade to a Turbo soon (Turbo S?!?). The Cayenne is pretty stealth-like, it goes through the snow incredibly well, and the S is fast--but the Turbo and Turbo S are damn fast! Make a Cayenn your "winter beater" and I'll bet you could even plow with it!!

I was thinking that a combination of boxster s and GT3 would be the ultimate pair. Likely the combo would cost similar to a turbo cab. That way it would satisfy the enthusiast, and well as the need for top down driving.

I have a 993 Carrera S and a 996 Carrera 4S, have a new 997 turbo on order.
The 993 is a keeper and I suspect the 996 will be too. As some said before , you can not have enough 911's if money is not an issue.
I agree with you on the coupe thing.
I think you will enjoy both your 911's tremendously and once you have your 997 you will never understand why you even had to think about getting one instead of that M5.

Default Baggerdude, isn't the SMG in the M5

like driving an Automatic. For me, a car with out a clutch doesn't get me interested as a sporty car. I love the performance of the M5, but I think that I would loose interest in it after a while. Just my opinion, as for more then one Porsche, I would have a few if I could afford it and it worked well with the driving requirements. The 993 is very special car...then again so is the 997.

Good Luck

Default M5 is "OUT" ... C4S is "IN"..

First, thanks everyone for all the suggestions and advice. It was terrific.

Since it was raining today and golf was out ... I did some errands and then decided to run past the Porsche dealer. The place was dead. Found a familiar face in my old tech advisor from BMW and a nice sales person.

After some chit chat, I sat in a couple cars ... then drove a new (143 miles old 911) Red Carrera S for about a half hour.

Since I've driven many Porsches over the years and own a '96 993 C4S, the entire experience was not completely 'foreign' to me. In fact the inside of the 997 is very much like the 'old' Porsches ... just freshened and more evolved.

There were no restrictions and after the car warmed up, I was able to take some entrance ramps at nearly 120 mph. Down shifting, and double clutching as I came into town ... then blast along again as I re-entered the Interstate. It was pretty fun.

The car had sport exhaust and chrono package which I found nice. I switched from sport to comfort on the suspension, too. Made the car much more compliant over the crappy roads ... but, I prefer the "S mode".

And, I made my decision. No M5 SMG deal for me ... I had them configure a car for me. They have a February delivery available, but I figured the weather may keep the car in the garage more than on the road. So, I have an April delivery for my car.

Here's pretty much what I got ...
C4S coupe, badge delete, adaptive/heated seats, thick steering wheel, sport exhaust, sport chrono pak, nav, carbon pak, self dimming mirrors, 19" sport wheels ... forest green, sand beige full leather. Around $100K+ car ... 30 month lease so I can drive it until October before returning the car.

Whatdaya think??

Congrats Bagger
I think you made a great choice. The e39 M5 is awesome (I wanted one but "settled" for an e46 M3 and an C2 996 early pre-02 car. However added an 03 X5 to replace my daily driver which was the M3 and downsided to an 05 997 C2 and just the X5. Thought about the new M5 and drove a few and they were amazing...also came very close to a 650i as the new M6 wasn't available yet and not anywhere near MRSRP or without selling a child or something due to waiting lists. However in the end the 997 drove so alot better than my 996 and was more refreshed that I had to go that route. Do I miss my M car...sometimes but a quick drive in my 997 fixes that! As for the new Bangle style of the M5 I agree it has issues. The only thing I would have probably done if I were you and had the means is to keep the M5 to go with your new 997 and old 993. Then you truly would have had the best of both worlds my friend.
