Default 997 Polished wheels--thoughts...

Guys, I promise this will be the absolutely last post on wheels from me. I want to know what your thoughts are on hard polishing some Carrera Classic 19's. I have lobsters now and am ditching them. I've had a wheel place here polish several sets of wheels for me on other cars of mine with fantastic results--not too shiny and not a dull paint finish (relatively speaking). Has anyone done this before to these wheels? I have checked and it can be done without compromising the intergrity of the wheel in anyway, just a finish out--nothing deep.

Thoughts...

I use rejex with great results on the Carrera Classics. Easy to clean off the brake dust as well.

They look good with a nice layer of clear coat and waxed up, but I'm looking for more depth than the standard finish. The outside and inside of the wheel will be done. The only area not finished would be the inside of the spoke, not visible anyway.

SS - the closest thing I can think of are the polished wheels on the 40th Annitersary 996. IIRC, they are 996 Carrera 5-Spoke wheels, and while they are not the Carrera Classics, they are very similar in design.

Here is a link to a 40th on ebay with a couple of good pics (#2 & #3) of the polished wheels. Hope this helps.

one word - disgusting!

Polished wheels look so tragic on Porsches.

They were the rage in Tokyo 10 - 12 years ago not any more

Hope I don't offend anyone : )

Gota911, that's a great represenation as to what they would look like as these are polished. Thanks for the photos.

I'm not sure how they will look but I can tell you the classics are the easiest to clean wheel I have owned thus far. Good luck.

SilverSteel,
Would the wheels be finished with a clear coat of some sort, or simply polished? If just polished, what is the best way to maintain the finish - metal polish? I'm not a fan of chrome wheels on Porsches, but the polished aluminum look is nice.

I've done it both ways, pollished and coated and just polished. If they are coated with a clear coat, they do eventually fade due to the sun's rays I suppose. So I usually don't coat them, leaving them bare. However, I will coat the inside of the wheel with clearcoat to make it easier to clean. The outside will remain bare. I'm still not completely convinced yet, but still researching.

Silversteel, maybe you've seen this already...Classic 19's in chrome finish (apparently they offer polished also but no readily available pic of polished)
http://www.wheelenhancement.com/inde...132&alt=chrome
.. if you squint your eyes, they look polished!

My opinion on polishing....the CClassics are beautiful, sculptural
3-dimensional pieces in plain old stock silver clearcoat. The Classics are a more visually appealing wheel than their predecessor Carrera 18's from the 996 era-- but when I see the polished 18's on the 40th Anniv.996, to my eye they look *virtually* chrome-- a bit incongruous with the rest of that particular car; I prefer the stock silver finish.

Regardless, I'd be very interested to see the end result if you decide to go forward, best of luck.

Nice. I've sent those idiots two emails with no response. I'll try again and will even try to call. Thanks for the info. I don't like the chrome as I think its too much bling. Stay tuned...
