Default Valve stem caps split

3 out of 4 valve stem caps have split right around the top. Exact same thing happened on my 05 Boxster as well. Not a big deal, as I can buy 4 more caps for a buck, but I wonder if the caps are just weak. Anyone else notice if theirs are split?

I assume you're talking about the plastics. I put the metal ones (aluminum, I presume) on mine and haven't had one split yet. I bought them from Porsche for around $15.

I had several stem valve caps split so I went with the metal caps as well. I think it is a common problem.

I think the plastic ones have to be used with TPMS - do you have TPMS?

Hmmm--interesting. I do not have TPMS but don't see how that would affect the pressure or monitoring of the tires. I would check with Porshe, though.

The manual specifically says not to use metal caps with the TPMS. I presume they would cause some type of interference with the pressure signal to the car's receiver, or increase the range of the transmitter so as to interfer with similar systems nearby. Does someone else know?

They're cheap plastic and probably get a bunch of UV exposure as well as heat from the wheels. With the TPMS, I am stuck staying with the plastics.

Does your car sit out in the sun during the day?

I had metal caps on my old car, but they were stolen within 3 days. Just went back to plastic after that.

FWIW, the recommendation to use the plastic valve stem caps is merely an attempt to avoid corrosion/damage caused by some (steel) metal valve stem caps.

The use of aluminum (or fully plated) metal valve stem caps (with integrated O-ring) should not cause any problem.

No TMPS problems with metal P-car valve stem covers.

I have plastic on my C4S and just replace them when they split. 4 for a buck - I don't love the look of the Porsche metal caps, so I'll continue to put my K-Mart aftermarket caps on!

You can get silver or gold brass caps with Porsche crest for $15: http://e-partssales.com/Merchant2/me...Code=997wheels
