Default Diesel?

Latest news from the EPA is that a low sulfur diesel will soon be available in the US... This is a move similar in magnitude to removing the lead from regular gasoline. Anyone know if there is diesel in Porsche's future? Can you imagine a Carrera running on french fry oil? Fast and smells good!

High sulfer has been available and that is what a diesel likes to operate on. Now there is low sulpher diesel in most stations and Ultra Low is next and now available. What's the deal? Each change costs us more and Ultra Low needs an additive to keep a current diesel happy. IT IS NOT AVAILABLE YET!
I am in the marine business and we just got our first load of Ultra Low and no additive (which will cost even more) 2007 diesels are made to run on Ultra Low but none before them are. I do not have information on what the results will be if you run the Ultra Low but the additive will probably be available in the next month or so. It may start out the the additive will be added at the terminal but with the 2007's on the way it most likely will be added by the consumer. It could be the overall price of the diesel will increase by 10 or more cents per gallon.

I have all of the above information verbally from my supplier and have seen nothing to back it up. The oil companies do not want to talk about it because they are behind with the additive.

Not entirely true, at least with automotive applications...low-sulfur has been the only diesel available in Europe for years, so pre-2007 European diesels are designed for it. 2007 diesels aren't allowed to run on the 'old' diesel because the low-sulfur stuff is required to pass the more strict 2007 federal emissions requirement.

Porsche has stated that they will not build a diesel; they are investing in hybrid technology for future models (Dr. Porsche was actually a pioneer in hybrids back in the 1940s).

I'm still a little surprised there's no V6 Cayenne diesel yet. Maybe later. Maybe a diesel V6 panamera for the european market? For all the concessions Porsche has made to the marketplace demands in the past ten years to increase sales volume I'm surprised there's no diesel engines - in the Cayenne at least & at least in Europe.

I was just wondering because my local dealer mentioned that Porsche is working on diesel as well as a hybrid format. He didn't have any more details than that.

well let's see, Porsche owns xx% of VW, who has a v10 turbo diesel which is what Audi uses in P1 LeMans and ALMS racing. and vw has had little 4cyl and straight 6 cyl diesels since the 80's

by the way the v10 turbo diesel in the vw touraeg is faster than the 4.2 V8 toureg. it has same hp 310 and 553 ft lbs of tourque

the low sulfur diesel fuel is available - the problem with bringing modern diesels to the US, is the pinheads at the EPA and CARB who demand NOx emission reductions from them, forcing the manufacturers into urea injection systems. so long as they can't sell 50 state legal cars, the germans will not bring diesels en masse to the US.

Low sulfur is indeed available, but until it replaces 'old' diesel at ALL stations, the 45-state car (Mercedes E320 Bluetec is the only one for 2007) can't be released. High sulfur will clog up the Bluetec's catalyic converters. Being trucks, the ML320 CDI, R320 CDI, and Touareg TDI don't require the Bluetec's complex catalyic converters, and will run on high-sulfur diesel. None of them will pass CA (and the four other states that follow CA) emissions, even with low-sulfur fuel.

BMW, Audi, and other manufacturers won't sell cars in the US unless they're available in all states. The hope is that urea injection will pass CA emissions tests, but the issue is how to ensure the urea tanks always have fluid.

I just bought a 2006 E320 CDI, and it's a fantastic vehicle. With most of its 369 lb/ft of torque available just off idle, it'll break the rear tires loose at the slightest provocation...and it'll get 34mpg cruising at 80mph. And that old iron, single turbo, 6-in-line is old school compared to the more modern motors from BMW and Audi...if/when those motors get here, it will be a good times for car enthusiasts. Hopefully Porsche jumps on the bandwagon (Cayenne and Panamera only), but as I mentioned previously, they've made statements saying they will not build a diesel.

is it still sold internationally (the V10 TDi that is) though it's no longer sold in North America?

I have high sulfur gas in my 911,...sometimes...which is why I use my sunroof and change the cabin air filter every 2000 miles.
