The E is much better (not that that is great LOL) than the CLK. Just spoke to a friend who went to an AMG challenge which had the new CLK 63 and he said the same thing - even the new 63 CLK was worst on the track. "All over the track" is I think how he put it.
My point was the CLK 55 handled better compared to the other AMG's I mentioned...Road and Track also confirmed this some time ago and albeit to their suprise, in a back to back AMG comp stating the CLK55 was the best car around the track compared to the E55, S55 SL55 and CL55. None of these AMG car's are designed to be sports cars, but high performance GT's or sedans...

On another note, comparing any of these cars at the track to a Porsche is just silly

I'm reading, but not believing what I see. I've owned two or three AMG's and I have to tell you, those cars can rock and roll hard. These are not your dad's Mercedes, these cars have completely different suspension and an engine that is "hand-built" to very tight specs. I love both cars, but for anyone to say they blew away an CLK55, you're simply dreaming. That new E55 has over 450hp and will run up your *** as one did to me in my 997S. The Porsche is a true sports car, the E55/CLK55 is the "ultimate" sports sedan (notwithstanding the M5). They are fantastic cars capable of incredible straight acceleration. They corner very well, but not nearly as good as a Porsche. On a straight away, I would not put any hard cash on your Porsche blowing out an AMG car (05+) unless you have some turns in the agenda.

I own an 06 E55 and they are straight line fast for sure due to the supercharged V8 which puts out 469 hp and 516 lb ft of trq. The CLK 55's only put out between 349 and 362 hp depending upon the year and weigh about /-300 lbs more than a 997S...CLK55's are not supercharged and if driven properly the 997 S will smoke a CLK55 in almost every regard. BTW the only supercharged car AMG is using for MY 07 is the Sl55, all others have been replaced with a large 6.2 litre normally aspirated engine putting out between 480-503 hp, but this new engine lacks the supercharged V8's massive 516 lb ft of trq and current 55 drivers are somewhat reluctant to trade for the new 63. Also since the CLK 55 never had the supercharger it got a big jump from 362 hp in the 06 to 480 in the 07, only the cabriolet will be imported to the US however, which is a real shame as the coupe is a better performer due to it's lower weight andbetter structural rigidity.

In the past, the CLK and E carried the same engine. When did they start putting different engines in the two cars? I had an E55 and it was significantly faster than my 996 tip, no doubt about it. However, I haven't compared the new E55 to 997s What are your thoughts since you have one?

Hi Silversteel:

In MY2003 the W211 E55 and some other AMG's (but not the CLK) went to a supercharged V8 engine. A 996 with a tip is not a "great" performing car so I could see where even the older E55 's was faster to a certain point. Hope this helps clear up some confusion.

What about the 997s compared to the 06 E55? I've pushed the limits with one and it was incredibly fast, hanging on my rear like cheap toilet paper.

My Dad's CL55 AMG will put a whuppin' on my 997S on the highway. That thing catapults like an F/A-18 off a carrier --- at any speed.

Three years ago I bought an '03 CLK55 (W209) current body style car. I had a baby on the way and could not justify a Porsche yet. While I have been waiting for my 997 GT3 to be built I have been taking "Senna" my CLK-55 to Pacific Raceways and am really impressed with the way it moves.

The powerband is very strong, the slush-box surprising, and the aftermarket 18" HRE wheels and Michelin Pilot Sports' hug the roadcourse in an impressive manner.

The exhaust note from the big V8 is intoxicating (Everybody comments on it!) and 3-4 different instructors have also been taken aback by its performance and surprising agility. (It is afterall a sport GT with 4 seats.)

This car was not purchased for the Track. The incoming GT3 will fill that void. But the owners of the Aston Martin V8, 997 Carerra cab, M3, Cayman, and new Shelby GT500 that were forced to let me pass on the roadcourse may have a slightly different attitude than most of the posts in this thread.

That being said, I cannot wait for my 997 GT3 to arrive. After that I may throw some Kleemann gear on the CLK55 for a change of pace from the Porsche.

My first post ---- Go easy on me.
