Question Why charge for 'metallic' paint?

I have often wonder why certain manufacturers charge for metallic paint. Is it because of the market will bear it or is there a material or time/cost/labor reason?

After looking through OCBen's links it comes down to 'because they can and do' versus a labor thing. I understand paint-to-sample is potential disruptive to the line; however, the rest is just pure profit.
