Bumperettes removal?
I was looking at the 2008 spy shots and noticed that the bumerettes are gone. I was then looking at some 2006 carrera pictures tonight and noticed the following:

No bumperettes on that Carrera 4S. Are they something that can be removed for a cleaner look like the picture above? Comments?

That’s a European bumper. If you want that look you’ll need to replace your bumper with a European one – plus cut off the aluminum brackets that the bumper-ettes mount to. It really is a sweet look.

I think the bumperettes are a DOT requirement for the US. The cars in the pics are probably european or photographed for promotional purposes. Plus some of the euro-plates tend to be long so they need the extra space hence no bumperettes for them. The US plates would look a bit funny in that wide space so i guess they came up with the bumperette idea. It was on the 996; 1st it was black the later it was body color.
They are removable but it may not look right due to the mounting holes/hardware behind the those pieces. Also, passing inspection might be problem down the line.
I guess you trade little protection for no protection...But yes it does look cleaner.

The US bumpers actually will save you some additional damage on the back end. But, there are always those who want to emulate the Europeans. I don't have a real problems with them,--see:

The rear bumperettes, combined with the US ride height, are DOT requirements, put into effect by lobbyists for the insurance companies as part of the 5mph impact requirements.
