Default I am a soon to be 997 owner (TT)

Greetings,

Many of you know me from the 993 board, I have been a Pcar owner since 2001.
Well, I am very happy to say, I will soon be the proud parent of a 997 TT (Mr. Animal)
I got a call from a dealer today who just got one in this morning. He has to hold the car until after the Porsche Parade in early August but then, It's MINE... My deposit is down and the car is ear marked for me.
It's an MSRP deal and the car has 90% of the things I would have ordered. It would be nice to get 100% but who the hell wants to wait till next April..

The car is Slate Grey Metallic with Black (Full Leather Sport Seat) interior. I will take ownership with 100 miles on the clock. The car will be used as a display for the Pcar parade and driven to and from the parade. I think I can handle 100 miles on the clock without a complaint. I know the car will be pristine when it's turned over to me.

I can't believe I actually found one this quick at MSRP. I really fell into it.

So, I know I have posted here and there in the 997 forum but I wanted to formally introduce myself. You'll be seeing a lot of me in the years to come.

I am a big track enthusiast and am a huge fan of the 997 (the 996 was just not my flavor)
-- I look forward to Apexing with you soon....

Congrats...that's nice for you...One thing does puzzle me, the 996 was not your flavor, but the 997 is? They are really close to the same car...styling wise.

The 996 is no doubt a great car. And don't think because it was not my flavor, that I'm putting it down. It's a monster. I've driven em on the track and on the street and they are fine vehicles.
- I don't however agree with the styling comments you made. The 997 looks much more like a 993 or classic styled 911 (bug eyes) etc. than the 996.
I would see a 996 coming up the road and think it was a boxster until it passed. I would then see a Boxster and think it was a 996 until it passed. Neither of which reminded me of the 911 heritage.
The 997 is a return to form.
Also, driving, the 996 felt to me (coming from a 993) that a lot of the "sports car" feel had been drained to make room for a car that was more cushy and easier to sell to the mass market.
When I drove the 997S, I felt as though I was back in a 993 +10 years of technology rather than in the 996 which made me feel as though I was in something more "japanese" feeling. Japan makes great sports cars but are generally more "user friendly" in the delivery. That's how I felt in the 996.

The 996 Turbo is a monster. The 996 in general have great performance numbers, much better than my 97 993 for example. But for some unexplainable reason, to me, something was lost in the 996 that was rediscovered in the 997.
At the end of the day though, the difference between a 993, 996, 997 is very small. Only a handful of people in the world can tell the difference, to most people, they are just 911's. And they are, just 911's, all great cars !!
- So please don't think of my comments as a flame. Just an opinion some people share and others do not..

Congrats, B-Line! Glad your wait will be a short one.

Having owned 964, 993, Boxster S, 996 and 997 - I pretty much agree with B-Line's assessment.

Congrats on the new Twin Turbo 997! I've been blessed to own many new Porsche's since 1982 both liquid and aircooled and have experienced the changes first hand over the years. Although I love the aircooled cars especially 84-89 and 96-98, the new 997 TT will be something special I'm sure. Enjoy!

Read this month's "Excellence" article on 997 Turbo when you get a chance. Sez it's a major/amazing improvement over 996 turbo.

You're paying MSRP for a used car? You state that it is being driven to the Porsche Parade,--in Portland, Oregon. How many thousands of miles are they logging on that thing? And you're in Louisiana?

LoL.. Nope, not Louisiana.. Beachwood Canyon, LA (Los Angeles)

The car is in Portland Oregon. The Parade is in Portland Oregon. The car will be delivered to me with less than 100 miles.

I'd insist on being the person that drives it to Parade. I know that if I had a TT that wasn't mine and I could drive it for 100 miles that I'd be flooring that sucker and driving it like a rental car to see what she could do, which isn't exactly the recommended break-in routine.

Couple of things:
1) Yes, I have to take a small leap of faith that no one will beat the car.
2) I've owned many preowned cars including my current 911 and I have no idea how my current car was driven before I got her. I would assume by the way she drives now, she was very well taken care of but you never really know.

3) Worst case scenario, someone goes out and romps on the car (which I don't think will happen) Just imagine if one of you saw "my car" being thrashed at or to a parade, I would probably know pretty quick. It's a small world and something like that could destroy the reputation of a dealership.

4) The whole "break in" thing is definately a subject for another thread but let me give you my current views. Breaking in, 10-15 years ago was important. Current cars, and I have had this conversation with many people on both sides of the argument, do not need to be broken in like the used to..
Matter of fact, some of us even believe the best way to break in a car is to "DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT." Get the brake pads hot and let the chemicals bond to the rotors. Break in the trans the way you plan to drive the car. etc..

Matter of fact, I'm going to start another thread on this.. I would love to hear peoples thoughts on Break In.. My bet is, there will be many opposing views.

B

-- btw, please don't think because I am talking about break in this way that I encourage the dealership to beat on my car..

B-Line,--good luck with the Parade Driver! I'm sure it will be just fine. These cars are so tough that even the worst driver can't do much to a car like that in 10 days.

Folks, you're getting B-Line worked up over nothing... it's a whopping 15 miles of bumper-to-bumper traffic on Hwy 26/I-5 from the local Porsche dealer to the Parade location. Even if the dealer wanted to thrash it, they'd never get out from behind the hoardes of slow-moving tree-hugger Priuses clogging the main highways out here! ;-) Now the backroads in wine country are a different matter and will be part of the numerous Parade tour routes planned. So check that odometer when you pick it up!

Congrats on the 997TT. I would agree it's a car with the spirit of the 993 with 10 years technology advancement. I never thought I'd trade my 993 for a water-cooled ride, but I made the mistake of test driving a 997S on a whim and the rest was history!
