Default A/C Question

For 20 years I have wondered:

Does the compressor cycle on / off based upon thermostat setting? Does this require "AUTO" setting on the climate control panel?

In other words, if the interior temp is 70 degrees, and the thermostat is set to 72 degrees, will the compressor be OFF, and thus not consuming power?

Or is the compressor always engaged and drawing power anytime the A/C is turned on?

I appreciate your informed comments.

My understanding of automobile a/c is that temperature is controlled by mixing warm air with airconditioned air and not by cycling the compressor.

I think the compressor is off when you turn the Econ on.
