Question Valentine 1 placement

I have gone thru the old threads, but I had a new thought.

Has anyone mounted the V1 on the BACK window passenger side, and then use the remote display unit on/in the dash. Hard-wired of course.

I get this idea from a Boxster i used to own. I mounted the V1 in that car between the seats on the rear "shelf," then hid all the wires and stuck the remote display on the left corner of the dashboard butted up against the windshield, conveniently hidden from outside view by the inspection sticker and registration sticker.

So on my new C2S, I thought of trying the same principal. One negative would be to impact the headroom for the rear seat....like that matters! hah! The rearview mirror view is not obstructed, though.

I believe with the remote display the main unit is visually muted, but i also remember needing to use black electrical tape to hide the red lights from being visible from behind. The audio over my right shoulder is no problem.

In the Boxster, the setup was pretty stealthy.

Anyone try this in 997???

I have my V1 mounted on the passenger visor and direct wired to a power source. Works fine, easy install

Very interested in this. Having a cab limits me, though.

i think it would be better to be in the front, since radar/laser threats will likely be in FRONT of you.

from the rear, they will just likely pace you.

The main V1 unit when used with the remote display will not light up except during its startup BIT checks. I still maintain that the best or optimal frontal detection capability will be with the antenna mounted as high as possible on the windshield.

My understanding is that the UV film they use at the top of the windshield has a tendency to block out reception and that the radar detector should be placed lower.

thanks for the comments. believe it or not, i actually forgot i have the visor clip!! i never liked it visor mounted on any car before, but trying it on the 997....actually quite decent. Not great for passenger tho...or for sun glare problems.

Bob - which power source? the self dimming mirror? (read that thread...scary!!! dont think i can handle that) or did you tuck the wire around the headliner to the dash console or fuse box. I also thought the visors wilth lighted vanity mirrors would have an accessible hot wire, but havent been able to find it.

we just did an installation on a 987S and we tucked it around the headliner to the fuse box. easy.

What Tom said, around the headliner and direct to the fuse box. I had a 996 Cab with the same install and it worked great. The only issue is the passanger doesn't have the use of the visor. They get over it, I have this set up in my other car too.

I've got a similar wiring setup in my 997 using the suction cup mounts but with an Escort X50. Works great, and the detector goes on and off with the ignition. Ok, I don't have the arrows that the V1 has, which I agree makes the V1 a bit better, but the Escort is small enough that the passenger's visor still works, and if the detector is going off, I'm going to probably slow down regardless of what a V1's arrows say.

posted these before.
this is how i mounted my V1. It's above the back seat with the remote in the cubby hole. works great and it's completely out of the way. i made a 'z' bracket out of home depot aluminum and tucked it under the bose subwoofer. the cable was run under the seat and through the console to the cubby hole.

Bob, how well does it work compared to having it on the visor? Can you see any difference?

forgot...
The V-1 can be programed to go dark so you don't have to worry about lights flashing to the rear.
Also, i've been on lots of PCA trips though the country side with other V-1 users and mine always goes off when theirs alarm, so mounting it where i have it has had no effect on sensitivity that i can tell.

pm if you want more detail (I, like you do this inmy wife's boxster)

Yeah, I have the remote piece too. Even running with the lights off and top down it looks like a brick on the visor. I'll check the rear mounting method and determine it's visability. It's not hard mounted is it?
