Daytime Lights

The DRL issue is like politics - there are a lot of people on both sides of the argument and each side is armed with its own misleading data.
In many European countries and in Canada Daytime Running Lights are "the law." They are not mandatory in the U.S. - yet.
I've seen a study that says they are actually detrimental to safety in sunny climates. But, as I said, there is a lot of self-serving data on this issue.
For me - cars with DRLs on are less attractive, especially our beautiful 997s. Thankfully, Porsche gives owners a choice to have them ON or OFF.
Many manufacturers (GM, Lexus, Toyota, etc.) have made the decision for you.
Mine are staying off.

And with gas prices being what they are, you're better off not running them.

DRL's insure that you can be easily seen in low-light conditions - like dusk and dawn. They may help you being seen in normal daylight conditions.
Ever notice that drivers - even sports drivers (maybe, expecially sports drivers) - forget to turn on lights in low-light conditions? Ever notice how hard it is to see small-profile cars in low-light?
Since it cost (essentially) nothing to keep the lights on, and DRL's do that automatically, and being seen makes you safer; why would you ever turn them off?

Like fog lights, Americans are too stupid to use DRLs properly, and American auto manufacturers are too incompetent to design them properly.
GM either uses high beams or parking lights as DRLs on most of their cars. Idiots that drive the cars then proceed into the darkness with either high beams on, blinding other drivers, or parking lights on and being invisible. This is not safer than using conventional headlights as they are intended.

Inj a sort of related way,--question on the Bi-Xenon's that are coming on my S,--can you flash another Porsche with those without impacting the life of the bulbs? (I say this as I have a similar operating system in a dive light and they don't recommend that you turn them off and then back on without a bit of a time delay.)

Edgy - if the BiXenons are off, I think that a quick high-beam flash will light the halogens below the projector beams.
I think. Not sure. I'd go out and try it, but the car is at home and I'm not.

As a daily driver, I love the extra "heads up" of the daytime running lights to the 4,000 pound SUV welding homemaker mom's changing the DVD in the SUV for their kid while they order dinner on the cell phone...(my wife).

At least my Silverado allows you to turn the DRLs off. They are default ON when you start the truck, but you can manually turn them off and they stay off untill you shut off the engine. Then....it defaults back to auto ON!
Just give me a choice. That's all I ask. Can't even turn them off on the Honda!!
