Tried my first autocross and I'm hooked. Now I need a proper helmet, but I'd like to try them on rather than buy one sight unseen on-line. Can anyone recommend a good place to buy auto racing helmets? The closer to Palo Alto the better for me, but I'm willing to go anywhere in the Bay Area.

Try Wine Country Motorsports at Sears Point (Infineon Raceway) www.winecountrymotorsports.com or www.helmetcity in Oakland. If you are planning to do some track days in addition to autocross, you'll want to buy a helmet that is for auto racing, not a motorcycle helmet. They have different standards for fire resistance and impact and many track groups will not allow motorcycle helmets.
Auto helmets will carry the Snell SA2005 rating and motorcycle helmets the Snell M2000 or M2005 rating.
Prices are about the same either way so get the right lid for your noggin.

Thanks everyone! Rather than mail order, I'd like to try them on to see how they feel and in particular, see how they work with my eyeglasses. I'm gonna give Helmet City in Oakland a visit (thanks MC for that reference).
