Default How to install front license plate

Next week I will have to install a front license plate to my P-car. I checked the front bumper today and it does not seem as if there is a set of predrilled holes and/or a set location for the front plates. I would appreciate a few ideas for installing the front plates. Thanks!

Well, after reading other threads here, maybe i should go without a front plate...uhmmm.
Nonetheless, any ideas are welcome.

If you must mount your plate, then go with some automotive attachment tape by 3m.
I have not mounted my front plate yet but have been thinking of scanning my plate and printing it onto a sticker and placing this on my bumper. Cops will see it from the front but it doesnt stick out when you look at the profile of the car.
I think I might get into more trouble if the cop actually finds out that it is a sticker but i am not sure.
In california they are pretty strict about the front plate but if you get a ticket, all it costs you is $10 if you double side tape in on then you can take it off.

How about one that you can attach and detach using the front tow hook without drilling any new holes? http://www.caymanclub.net/topic.asp?...le=Cayman+Chat

Here's an excellent idea. Have to make your own brackets though.

They will probably be extremely pi**ed because I read that the REFLECTIVE quality of the plate is essential to reflect laser and nail you for speeding.

Insted of no plate you can get a ticket for counterfeit plate or something worse?

Just a guess.

That one looks similar to the one sold here.

mmd:

I really like that idea... I'll hesitate to say that I had that very same idea last week...

I'm running my temp tag until the end of June (even though I have my plates <g>) - I refuse to drill thru the front bumper. In the meantime, I'll see if I can come up with a solution like the one pictured in your post...

The Cayman tow hook solution is cool as heck, but off-center, it looks kinda... well... strange, IMHO.

Damned State of Illinois!

sorry but that off center tow hook idea is horrible, plus I already plugged up the tow hook hole anyway.
MMD I heard of a ferrari owner being taken to jail because he custom painted his plate in UCLA bruins colors. I was thinking of using some pearl white reflective tape. There are alot of online sources. I still think it might be easier/safer to just pay the $10 tickets...
My aftermarket bumper will look horrible with the real plate and the only place it would fit is the senter inlet anyway.

What I like about this idea is that if one were so inclined, they could put the front plate on during annual inspection (front/back plates required to pass in MA) and then remove it afterwards without doing any damage to the bumper!
Does anyone know off hand if the tow hook is the same on the 997 and Cayman?

I don't like the look of it either and haven't bought one yet but as Coochas points out it does let you put on the plate when you need it. I went about 2 days parking my Corvette in Manhattan before one of the ubiquitous meter maids gave me a ticket for no front plate. I reluctantly put on a front plate since I couldn't afford $400 a week for tickets. My solution for the Porsche? I don't park it in NYC. While I have been stopped once in upstate New York for no front plate I didn't get a ticket and will take my chances for now leaving the front end clean.

When mounting the front plate on my 997 I fabricated brackets from .090" aluminum with an .063" aluminum plate backer along the idea that MMD has shown. That way you can mount the front plate as low as you wish. When mounting I used 3M Dual Lock tape with VHB adhesive backing. It is far more weather resistant than Velcro, and has held the front plate on above 100mph. You can find it through automotive parts stores and many dealers. Additional information can be found at 3M.com.
Now for those who want to think along more adventerous lines, how much of your license plate could you trim away and still retain all essential information? Take a look, how big does it really have to be?

The nicest front plate install is mine: NO FRONT PLATE...PERIOD. If needed I'll pay the ticket.

According to the 3m.com site, the VHB is a "permanent" solution. Are you able to remove the plate in the future without damage to the car?
