Thoughts on 997 vs. 996 and comments on a few options

The used 996 market is good here, as I imagine it is everywhere. The 996 was the best selling 911 by far. Now that the 997 has arrived, and everyone loves it, 996 prices are sinking fast.
That's true, but the 997 used car prices are also inviting. A moderately equipped '05 997 with only around 8K miles sold for $64K at a Dealer near me. The car originally had a $72K asking price but sat on the lot for a few months, so the price kept getting reduced until it sold.

It will make driving a modern 911 affordable to many, and the truth is that they'll get MOST of what the 997 offers for a fraction of the cost. IMO, the 996 40th Anniv Edition, which never sold well, can be had for great pries and is the best normally aspirated 996 daily driver. What a beaut.
I'm looking at an Arctic 997S with sport seats, sport chrono, bose, and a few other little goodies. There are a few 911's competing for my money these days actually . . . more details soon I hope!!

I find it funny, though, that a lot of the old air-cooled gang who would never consider a 996, now find the 997 acceptable because the lights are round! The superior driving dynamics of the 996 wouldn't do it for them, but now that the headlights are reminiscent of the 993, they're in!

I really have not tried what you suggest but I will when the weather gets nice again. Now, assuming that there really is a difference, then it reaffirms my believe that whaetver Porsche did could have been accomplished for a lot less money by leaving the fancy clock out. They just want you to pay a very high price for an option and having something you can "see" (i.e., a fancy clock) is their way to justify charging an arm and a leg for it. Why not just cut the price of the option in half and leave the ugly clock out?
