Default Mobil 1, 0W40 On Sale for $4.99/QT

March special at Kragen's/Checker/Schucks with $1 off coupon, limit 1 case per coupon.

What gets me is that this oil only a year ago was regularly priced at $4.99/qt. This is synthetic oil, produced in the lab, not from fossil crude, and should therefore not be dependent on the current high price of crude oil!

The only reason it seems they price it high now (besides because they can get away with it) is because regular oil is high and so therefore this oil should be too (as if 4.99/qt wasn't high enough already), and they're counting on the non-thinking masses to draw the false parallel.

Speaking of oil, how often do you guys change your oil on your 997?

I have a hard time digesting the 2 years / 20,000 miles recommendation.

My Benz has done fine with 1 year / 12,000 miles (for 6 years), but it doesn't work as hard as a Porsche engine in my naive opinion.

With that many links I suspect it is much like the debates people had with Mercedes when they introduced FSS (Flexible Service System). The consensus to that war was "no way, I'm trusting a computer - I'm gonna do oil changes every <3 - 6> months or <3000 - 7500> miles because oil is cheaper than engines." Personally I decided to have faith in FSS and thsu far I've been lucky.

Since Porsche doesn't use FSS (which measures oil quality), I'm not as trusting with the estimates. Even with synthetics, I'd have a hard time going longer than a year, even if cabs and truck drivers go that long between changes.

Mobil 1 is made from either natural gas or dino oil, that is cracked, so petroleum prices do affect it. Not that Mobil is adverse to making lots of money, of course.

I believe in a once a year oil change, with filter(s), which equates to 5-6K miles.
