Well, I've never seen Porsche take a step back with it's 911 with performance.......I doubt they did that with a 997. So, it has to be better,...i've never driven one though. FWIW, The 997S lap times at the ring are so close to the venerable 996gt3, how could it not be better than than the base 996.

If you are looking for some thing other than performance, then it depends highly on your personal preferences,...

Basically, I'm just saying that the 996 is still a really great sportscar, and if money is an important issue, then celebrate, because it can be had for a really great price nowadays. No shame in that!

If money is not an issue, then run out and get a 997S with X51, sport chrono, sport seats, PCCB, and sport exhaust!!!

i agree, the 996 is currently a steal!!!! of course, if money is no object, then how about a carrera gt, or a ferrari 430 ??? but my financial situation is currently

My first point is that you can only comment if you HAVE driven these cars. The logic that it has to be better because it's newer is just ridiculous.

The second point is that the comparison does not concern the 997S - of course it's better - it has a totally new variable suspension system, more power, more torque, etc. The comparison between the driving experience of a 996 and a standard 997 is MUCH closer.

I challenge anyone to come up with 3 independent and objective performance tests between a post facelift 996 and a well matched non-S 997 that demonstrate a convincing superiority of the 997. . .

Even if someone can do that, now factor in the price difference . . . see where this is going?

What's a post facelift 996? Are you referring to the 2001 3.4 vrs the 2002 3.6?

I know for a fact that the 998 WILL BE a better performer than the 997, there is absolutely no question about it......and this is even though there are not even speculations on the next model (possibly 998). WHY? It's history my friend, history. Porsche's hereditary is not to have round lights or air cooled motor, but the continous improvement in performance on a rear engine platform. Therefore, it has to be better. Now, obviously one has to drive a car to appreciate the difference (as the improvement in performance may have destroyed something you personally hold dear in a porsche, the round lights, aircooled, the rawness etc.), but there is no question that the base 997 is a better performer than the base 996. You have to attain Porsche Nirvana to appreciate such things,.... not everyone can be expected to, therefore, you are excused.

Yeah, the front end treatment changed with the higher displacement, thus the "facelift".

Quick Reply: Is 997 that much better than 996
