Default The Porsche Pinocchio Files

This is where we compile all the Porsche salesman stories, myths, and untruths they tell customers. I'm guessing pretty much everyone has at least one story that fits. And let's judge which story gets the "Long Nose Award".

Mine:

"The rear parking sensors will sound an alarm if the car behind gets too close. That's when you brake test them. Ha!"

How about while 997 shopping: "Porsche said we're not supposed to tell anyone, but Sport Chrono increases HP and torque by XX"

While Boxster shopping: "Sport Chrono (no PASM on the car) stiffens up the handling nicely"

My 997 coupe salesman (who's now running a restaurant), upon seing me gaze longingly at a 987:

"The Boxster (non-S) is perfect - the Boxster S is crazy overkill."

Oh I forgot - another Porsche salesperson, who knew I was suspicious of a 'Launch edition'

"Oh, don't tell anyone I told you this but Porsche builds all launch editions by hand to make sure nothing goes wrong."

Not always true . . . mine came early and two options I wanted but were not "open" at the time I ordered mine became available . . . black guages and sport shifter.

Actually I just asked my buddy if I really needed the sport shifter for $1000 . . . He said I did so I ordered it.

Here is my dealer's explanation why I should not opt for the Porsche Sports Exhaust on my 997S order: "PSE doesn't do anything for the S. The real sound difference is between the 3.6l and 3.8l engines, so PSE is only good for making the base 997 sound more like the 997S."

Mine said that the valet key had a RPM limiter function incorporated into it.

He also said that there is no spare for the car and Porsche will never make a spare tire that would fit the car.

Mine didn't really feed me any crap. He emailed the order guide in Adobe Acrobat to me so I could play with it. I told him don't bug me I'll come to you when I'm ready. I did my research and any questions I had (even the test questions where I already knew the answer) were answered in a clear, straightforward manner.

When we went to test drive (he knew I was into the marque and knew more about the history than he did) he led my buddy and I into the back shop. There was a Carrera GT awaiting delivery beside a 959 that supposedly formerly belonged to the Sultan of Brunei and beside that was a brand new 996 Cup Car that was just unloaded.

All in all I had a good experience.

Scottsdale Porsche told my sister in law back in 2001 that the little light on top of the dash that blinks when the alarm is activated is also a digital camera that shoots pics of the driver if the car is ever stolen. True story. No kidding.

Porsche sales manager, not just a salesman, while trying to convince me to buy the black on black launch edition of the 997 S that they had put 250 miles on as a demo, upon my pointing out that I don't want NAV said, "They all come with NAV. No way around it."
