You really won't believe the power from 5000 to the limit at 7200. It's unlike any Porsche I have driven. And the sound is unbelievabe. This is the best sounding Porsche of all time at full throttle.

Geez, I just picked my S up yesterday--FINALLY! Had 7 miles on the odo and before I knew it I hit 4500RPM, and touched 5000RPM a couple of times on the trip home from the dealer. (Oil temp at 200) It just seems next to impossible to stay below 4200RPM without occasionally going higher in the rev range. OTOH, I'm not holding a constant speed as I'm pretty much continually shifting up or down. The car just has a mind of it's own =)

(2) vary the engine speed all the time
Just don't drive it like you're at the track for the first couple thousand miles.
Been breaking in Porsche engines for years. (33 years of Porsche driving). Hae had very good luck with this regiment.

800 miles too long? I am not sure that Porsche would agree with that. I am based in the UK. First post. Tomorrow, I get to see my new 997 for the first time. It's arrived in the country and I will collect in a couple of weeks time when I return from a trip somewhere warm. If it was slightly warmer here, I would have taken advantage of the Porsche collection offer which is a trip to the factory and a 1000 mile dash on some unregulated German autobahns back to the UK. 5000 revs is what they usually suggest you limit the engine to for the first 1500 to 2000 miles. I wonder whether the different US advice is because of the very low octane gas you have over there? I have rented a Jag XK8 in Florida and was suprised to see that the highest rated fuel is the stuff for lawn mowers. On the other hand the price of gas is a fraction of what we pay here. Porsches for courses, as they say.

Don't expect octane number has anything to with it.
Also: octane number quoted in the US is something else than the octane number used in Europe. Definition is different. See one of the threads regarding octane numbers.

Redcoat Rave: Recommended fuel octane ratings: 98 RON (your'n) = 93 CLC or AKI (our'n). We have 93 CLC/AKI in the colonies, except for some of our young up-start states that like to punish drivers by serving up only 91 octane . We also have 86 (regular) and 89 (plus) octanes. We mow our lawns using 86, but race our mowers with tuned engines on 93 or 91.

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind when I decide which of the states to visit next time. I had no idea that RONs differ on both sides of the pond. I just figured that the environmentalists had taken over and the huge capacity engines you make would be happy on anything. No offence to American friends, just ignorance on my part despite at least 6 visits a year for the past 13 years. If anyone could point me in the right direction for a tuning manual for my lawn mower, I would be grateful.

Regarding octane numbers: the actual gas isn't different (maybe a little bit), it is the way the number is defined in different countries. Some show (Research + Motor)/2, other Research only and other see above.
