Default Question for all you former waiters.

I am an impatient man and am waiting for delivery of my 997s. Is there any way to track where the car is along the process and once its on route? I'd love it if it was like a FedEx package and you could see its movement toward the dealer but I doubt it. I'd ask my salesman but he seems to know less about these things than I do. Any info you all could provide would be greatly appreciated.

You can't, but your dealer can once the car reaches a certain point in the production line .
He will then be able to follow the progress all the way to a US port .
Happy waiting . Lol

Did you order the X51 option? I heard that there is a supply problem with this option.

Call your salesperson. They will be able to tell you when:
- it has a VIN on the production line
- it is finished
- it ships out on a boat
- it hits port and leaves on a truck/train

I am a waiter myself, but I am at port just waiting for release and trucking up to Washington. My salesperson has kept me up-to-date the entire time, but no FEDEX on-line tracking options available.

Good luck

Please let me know when you're finally behind me on the road. I'll be sure to let you pass.

Question

Fellow Forumeers, a related question from another impatient guy who still hasn't been able to find the answer: How long does it take from (1) signing the retail order and paying the deposit, until (2) the salesperson putting my order into the computer. And then, how long does it take from (2) the data input, until (3) receiving the ACKNWL code (I know the time frames AFTER that, but not before that; I paid the deposit on December 28 and was told I could go over the order before they put it into the computer; when is that typically done?). Thanks!

Most dealers will load it right away.

Soulteacher - It was 2 days for me. I ordered in late October for a November build that my dealer had open. I was pushing the timing anyway, but decided to change an option after the fact. 2 days after I placed the order not only was it in Porsche's system but it was locked and could no longer be altered.

What is your build month? If it is way off, maybe the dealer just isn't rushing it so you can change your mind a few more times . If it's soon, you need to talk to someone and light a fire or two.

Thanks! That helps. I will double-check again. I DID say I'd be out of the country until June, so maybe they really just don't want to order it too early. But I will inquire again. I just didn't want to seem to be too impatient. Thanks again!

Since you asked....

I found a reference to it somewhere else in the rennlist I think. It cited the whole gamet of factory computer codes that describe its level of ordering, building, and shipping. SOMEONE here probably knows the link to the list.

I made a hardcopy for myself and am checking off (slowly!) each of them as they come along.

Dan

Picking it up 12 May in Zuffenhausen

I'm trying to do the same thing along with any production pics, port delivery etc.

I'm scheduled for February production with an April/May delivery.

Good luck!

Get order codes at http://www.986faq.com/3-0/default.asp, but some are different for the new system that replaced the system that was used when this was written. It is mostly accurate though.

I found it frustrating the P does not offer a website tracker .... afterall, BMW has a neat little site where you can see where your car is in the entire process. The granularity was pretty cool, as the site would even tell you which part of the manu process the car was in e.g., the car was being painted. Anyway, it was fun thinking of Hanz and Franz actually painting my M car.

I agree. When I ordered my last Benz in 2000 they had the same closed system that Porsche has today, but at least my salesperson was good about sending me screen shots everytime something changed (and she seemed to be checking at least a couple times per week). It has been like pulling teeth for me to get updates with the dealership I've been working with. Of course, when they are still hand writing their orders and printing on dot matrix printers, you know your sorta screwed going in.

Heck, I even had to beg Alfie to get me an update once (he didn't respond when I tried to do it again later).

Doing a web site really wouldn't be that tough (I know, I'm in the software business) and the customer satisfaction during the ordering process would go way up.
