Can you order the PSE from your dealer if I already have my 997 but the PSE was not one of my options.Any idea of cost and how long it takes.Opinions appreciated if it would be a good move.
Yes. You can get it on ebay or direct (from Brandywine Porsche, Suncoast Porsche, both dealers) for $1,650-1,700. Installation without the on-off switch should be no more than $200 (or DIY); if you install the on-off switch, the labor cost is quite a bit more (and varies whether or not you have sport chrono). Very well worth it!!!!
I installed it after a couple of thousand miles. I have sport chrono and left the on/off switch out. It is in PSE mode all the time. It really does get substantially louder after a few more thousand miles. I constantly get compliments on the sound of the car.
It is well worth it.
Why does Porsche give you the option of shutting off PSE or turning it on.Does it get to loud to have on all the time? Why would you want to shut it off if it sounds so good?
when you get the 2006 "S" you do not get a switch to shut it on or off anymore. I got it on my 06 S and it is on all the time. Much louder though when the sport mode is on. Love it when you put sport on and push to red line. Beautiful sound.

The first time I heard PSE was in the confines of a Porsche Service garage. As the mechanic drove the car to the work bay, he couldn't help but hit the gas pedal a few times in neutral to raise rpms which brought smiles to everyone in the area. Even the mechanic who works on Porsches every day was smiling when he got out of the car.

Interesting that you have no switch - I have an 06 S with PSE and it came with the factory on/off switch. The difference between this and my 02 C4S is that the system now defaults to the quiet mode and you have to manually switch to sport on each start up.
Do you have Fabspeeds? I put a set on and did not like them at all (very "muffled" sounding). How do they compare with the sound clip below (which is very realistic for PSE, which I now have)? I'm still wondering if my Fabspeeds were defective or just not broken in.
On an '06 997 S with a factory PSE there is a separate switch to control the PSE if you do not have Sport Chrono Plus. If you have SCP the Sport mode switch also controls the PSE. In addition the DME will automatically override the switch and put the PSE in and out of quiet mode based on vehicle speed.

IMHO it is better (and cheaper) to fit the PSE after purchase. I did that on my old 996 C4S and will do the same on my 997S I am picking up next week. I would never want the PSE in off mode so I would just have the PSE mufflers installed and save a ton of money on labor by not having the cabling and the on off switch installed.
Even if you need the on and off flexibility I would still remove the cutout that occurs at certain RPM ranges even when in on mode. I believe this cut out was due to European noise ordinances?
