To me traction isn't something you can have enough of, so I opted for the C4s despite my intentions to avoid driving my 997 in the rain.
hi,

do you have the chance of posting some pictures of XPA thicker steering wheel.
thanks

I had the opportunity to drive both the S and the 4S before ordering a 4S. Both offer great dynamics, but ultimately the C4S felt like that much more car in a very "positive way". The addition of awd, a wider track and larger rear tires, (not to mention the visual and psychological impact of the rear bodywork) combine to bring the C4S a little closer to supercar status than its 120 lb. lighter rear drive cousin.

I had some seat time behind the wheel of a friend's Gallardo and the 4S comes very close to the rock solid feel and stability of that amazing car. Interestingly, despite a 150 BHP deficit and similar curb weights, the Porsche and the Lambo both accelerate to 60 mph within a few tenths of each other in the low to mid 4 second range. An impressive result considering the Lambo's extensive use of aluminum, serious lack of storage space and an MSRP fully twice that of the C4S.

I live in Florida where snow is not a factor and I just picked up my '06 C4S. I have owned lots of RWD cars -- (incl. a 993 C2S a few years back and a string of E46 M3s). After driving the 997 C2S on a number of separate lengthy test drives, I decided to order a C4S. To me the C4S still feels more balanced with the engine hanging out the back than the C2S. In the E46 M3 I at least have a trick limited slip diff (oem) to balance the tail of the car at the limits in the wet. If the 997 has a limited slip option I would have rethought my order.

But it rains A LOT where you live. I'd want AWD in a rainy area.

The C4S is 44 mm (almost 2") wider than the C2S. The added width is at the rear wheel arches which flare slightly to accomodate a 1+" wider track and wider 305/30 19 tires in the case of the C4S.

The difference is subtle but noticable and definitely desirable to most 911 enthusiasts.

One of the reasons I purchased a C4S was not only the AWD (which I need because I drive the car all year in NY) but with the standard features of the C4S I felt it was a better value over the C2.

Check the standard features of both cars.

In the 996 you got free full leather, wider rear and different front bumper, shared with the TT, the red reflector strip, and bigger brakes and tires with awd. In 997 C4/S you get a wider rear, but no extra leather, and the brakes are the same as the C2/S.

Porsche's market research would seemed to have missed two major reasons people bought the 996 C4S - looks, and the extra stuff as standard. 997 C4/S sadly doesn't offer those reasons anymore. You can debate the visibility of the extra width in the 997 C4/S, but the 996 C4S was SO much more distinctive and easier to recognize.

Not quite. On the AWD models the brakes are prefilled when you step off the gas quickly.
"On the new all-wheel drive models (911 Carrera 4 and 911 Carrera 4S), the driver is assisted by a 9-inch tandem brake booster. Safety is further enhanced on the all-wheel drive models thanks to two new functions in the specially revised version of Porsche Stability Management. Overall, the result is a powerful capability that is crucial to the performance of the car."

Good point - I had forgotten about "pre-fill"

That's really a shame...

having had 2 C2S and now a C4S I am pretty sure C2S does not have pre-fill brakes and Porsche Driving Experience instructor tells me also that pre-fill brakes are unique to AWD models.
