I had the opportunity to drive both the S and the 4S before ordering a 4S. Both offer great dynamics, but ultimately the C4S felt like that much more car in a very "positive way". The addition of awd, a wider track and larger rear tires, (not to mention the visual and psychological impact of the rear bodywork) combine to bring the C4S a little closer to supercar status than its 120 lb. lighter rear drive cousin.
I had some seat time behind the wheel of a friend's Gallardo and the 4S comes very close to the rock solid feel and stability of that amazing car. Interestingly, despite a 150 BHP deficit and similar curb weights, the Porsche and the Lambo both accelerate to 60 mph within a few tenths of each other in the low to mid 4 second range. An impressive result considering the Lambo's extensive use of aluminum, serious lack of storage space and an MSRP fully twice that of the C4S.

I live in Florida where snow is not a factor and I just picked up my '06 C4S. I have owned lots of RWD cars -- (incl. a 993 C2S a few years back and a string of E46 M3s). After driving the 997 C2S on a number of separate lengthy test drives, I decided to order a C4S. To me the C4S still feels more balanced with the engine hanging out the back than the C2S. In the E46 M3 I at least have a trick limited slip diff (oem) to balance the tail of the car at the limits in the wet. If the 997 has a limited slip option I would have rethought my order.

The C4S is 44 mm (almost 2") wider than the C2S. The added width is at the rear wheel arches which flare slightly to accomodate a 1+" wider track and wider 305/30 19 tires in the case of the C4S.
The difference is subtle but noticable and definitely desirable to most 911 enthusiasts.

One of the reasons I purchased a C4S was not only the AWD (which I need because I drive the car all year in NY) but with the standard features of the C4S I felt it was a better value over the C2.
Check the standard features of both cars.

Porsche's market research would seemed to have missed two major reasons people bought the 996 C4S - looks, and the extra stuff as standard. 997 C4/S sadly doesn't offer those reasons anymore. You can debate the visibility of the extra width in the 997 C4/S, but the 996 C4S was SO much more distinctive and easier to recognize.
