There is also another interesting factor regarding Apple and their iPod OEM licensing fees.
They charge a fixed percentage (it was 10%....might now be 6%) of the RETAIL price of the option directly related to an iPod.
So, if an OEM charges $500 for the iPod interface, they are required to sent Apple a check for 6-10% of that $500 for each vehicle sold.
This is the same with ANY iPod device (powered speakers, FM modulator, etc).
Some car OEM's have a problem dealing with things like this..........

I've been waiting for a way to integrate my iPod into my car ever since I bought a 2003 C4. It's ridiculous that it's taking so long to be able to use the most popular music player in the world. What's so great about this MOST system anyways? I'd give anything just to have a regular line-in connection.

Steve,
Read at your own risk:

Or you can head over to the Cayenne forum....it's been discussed MANY times over there.
MOST was 'sold' to the OEM's for a multitude of reasons (lower cost due to no copper wires, better EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) performance, sufficient bandwidth for video and audio, etc) by the folks who invented it (in Germany).
For those who have to design with it, it's sort of a Greek tragedy............
