What do you mean, $5K deposit toward the purchase of the car?

lol. Yeah, even $88,665 is a lot for a 5 series that starts at $42,500. Basically $50,000 worth of extras. And no matter what they add to it, it doesn't look like a $100,000 car. I'd be embarassed to tell someone I paid that much for it.

Edmunds.com, which does fair reviews, mentioned that the M5 is worth every penny. The only other expensive car that they said that about was the C2S, as far as I can recall.

Contrast this to the approach of dealers in Germany. I was there in September, and happened across a used M5 with the equivalent of about 3k miles on the clock. They were offering the car for sale at MSRP minus about 10%. In other words, no price jacking going on.

As a fun aside, after looking at the car and talking with the salesman, he offered a test drive. NATURALLY I accepted his offer. We hit 175 mph on the Autobahn (the computer had been recalibrated to over ride the speed control that I believe BMW sets at 155 mph).

After spending all day in a 997S, the M5 felt really heavy. I actually scared myself in a couple of bends on the Autobahn. I carried the same speed as I would in the 997S, and all that weight was quite a handful. Yeah, she's got a ton of power, and the paddles are fun, especially with 7 gears. But I sort of felt like I was playing a video game rather than being fully engaged in driving the car, as in the Porsche.

But getting back to my original point -- dealers. Comparing the approach of a US Bmer dealer to that of a German Bmer dealer: night and day.

Don't forget that after you have been fleeced at the dealer for the market adjustment, there is a $3000 gas guzzler tax to add to your misery. Enjoy your new M5.

a true irony...when you realise that the Cayenne Turbo avoids the gas guzzler tax...after all it is a truck
