Default Castrol Syntec

Anyone using Castrol Syntec in their 911?

I've been using it happily in our Audi twin turbo for a while now. And that car is running well with its GIAC induced 325 HP. But I always stuck with Mobil-1 in my 996. Well, unless you request Mobil-1, my Porsche dealer uses Castrol Syntec 5w40. I forgot to request the M1 when the Zoomer got her recent oil change and she got Castrol Syntec. At first I was a bit unhappy. But that was until I started driving the car.

The motor seems to run more smoothly and it seems to rev up easier with the Syntec. I'm liking how things feel with the Syntec. If my misfire hiccup never returns I'm sticking with it.

Syntec is one of the approved oils by Porsche. Even if it wasn't, it is a great oil for any car.

Castrol has gotten some heat from some oil refiners because their definition of "synthetic" is not as tightly defined as most other refiners.

Does anyone use Amsoil in their cars? I have used this synthetic in all my vehicles and have noticed an increase in mpg. It is supposed to be better than Mobil 1.

I used Castrol in all my racing motorcycles years ago. It was great then and I'm sure it has only improved. I will continue to use Mobil 1 0-40 in my 997 as well as my 987 and my old Corvette. Amsoil is a great product but hard to find, at least in my area.

Porsche does extensive testing of oils and suggests Mobil 1. I will stick with that. The most important thing according to Mobil is that you use the right oil filter which is the Porsche OEM filter. They say never use an off brand.

The good ole' oil topic...

My Bi-Turbo A6 runs "Dino" as per Audi, the Porsche's all run Mobile 1...

I have spent hours on my Motorcycle forums discussing Amsoil vs HD Synthetic vs Mobile 1, etc....

Good luck on this topic

I guess ultimately I think they're all good. I use Amsoil 5w30 in the Yukon because it's the only 5w30 synthetic I can find locally. I use Syntec 0w30 in the Audi because it's the only 0w30 synthetic I can find locally. I use Red Line 10w30 in our truck because I bought a case for my old SAAB and never ended up using it. I'll put anything in the pickup truck. It's the only car I still change the oil on myself. I used Mobil-1 religeously in my 996. But I guess I'm happy enough to use Syntec in the 997. They're all syntetics and they're all good I reckon. I've got a pretty open mind to these things. But I don't know why I have this feeling that the Castrol Syntec is maybe a bit better than the Mobil-1. I need to find a petroleum engineer somewhere to set me straight.

That's where the fun starts! Between two "Petro Engineer's" I've heard everything from "Dino" is as good as "Synth", that the motor oil is only as good as it's additives, only jet turbines really need "Synth", etc. etc. etc.

Key is, if ya like it use it!

You need synthetic oil if you are looking at 10 - 20 K mile oil changes. MB made the mistake several years ago when they switched to using FSS and 12 - 13 K and 1 year oil changes of not recommending synthetic oil initially. They found that the engines had developed sludge on dino oil and quickly changed their recommendation to synthetic. This was the subject of a class action lawsuit against DCX who agreed to warantee these engines for several years beyond their standard factory warantee.

Anyone know how much Mobil pays Porsche each year to recommend its product?
