Fine but your intitial suggestion was to "go to a dealer and look at their used car inventory" which I effectively did.

OK. Autotrader. Right now there are about 105 base models and 80 S models for sale on a nationwide search. Hardly an overwhelming difference.

Let's seen now. According to the new math 105 = 80 X 10 ????

Porsche is selling just as many base models as S. I think that it's premature to predict its demise.

I also think that there are perfectly legitimate reasons to go with the S. It's just that those reasons have yet to be convincingly articulated in this thread.

It's not about "bling-bling" for me... it's about pretending I'm BARON VON RICHTHOFEN.

Look, I'm invisible.

"[4) there is no replacement for displacement"

Wouldn't this argue for a Viper or Corvette? Setting aside 0-60 times and horsepower for a minute, is there a marked driving difference between the 997 and 997s in the characteristics that have always distinguished Porsche from the competition - handling, cornering, braking and steering?

Indeed, even taking 0-60 times and horsepower into consideration there is just not that much difference between the two.

My decision was take the base model and put the extra money towards the track car where it will make a real difference (in safety or performance). How often to you get to push the s on the street to appreciate the difference with the base model? I couldn't tell the difference in the test drive. Add x51 though and I bet things get interesting.

If you have the money for the s get it, if you don't forget it. Its all a matter of what you can comfortably afford.

If you can afford a 997 turbo with good options, then wait.....
