Default Radar Detector Plug?

When I bought my new 997S, I ordered a very expensive radar detector. It works great.....but both the cigarrette lighter plug and the auxillary plug in the console stay hot all the time. When I pull into the garage and shut the car off, the radar detector won't go off.....so I have to unplug it. It's easy to forget to unplug it, and several times I've gotten in the car to find it on. You'd think a car like this would shut down those plugs. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Buzz

Buzz, I found the same thing (just using my iPod vs. radar detector). It is a PIA I hear to make the plug switched. My tech told me he would install an additional switched plug in my glove box as a solution. Hope someone who knows can chime in.

Have it hard wired in, not too hard on a 996, prolly the same on a 997, or just get a escort solo s2, cordless, works great.

Cars are designed with constant 12V cigarette adapters to allow for the connection of a battery charger/trickle charger; and also a design legacy to allow passengers to use the cigarette lighter without requiring the keys to the car.

Switched (and fused) 12V is provided for in the fuse panel; there have been numerous threads in the 996/996TT/986 forums regarding 'hardwiring' your detector (or accessory) to this location.

Hardwiring a Valentine1 is straightforward with the kit provided and works exceptionally well.

Well, I can see just a cigarette lighter on constant for lighting cigarrettes. Yak! But why have the accessory plug in the console constant on too? I can hardwire it off the fuse pane easilyl. I just don't think I should have to. For $90k someone should have thought of that in Stuttgart. I can't think of one accessory I would want to plug in and just have it constantly on or running, thus draining the battery.

I have a Valentine One in my TT Stealth. Don't believe that ad you read about how you can't get zapped with one. I got stopped for 110 in a 75 (interstate) and the Valentine never went off. As I was getting my ticket, I asked the Trooper what kind of radar he was using. "X band"!!!! I thought he was joking. He said he couldn't believe I hadn't picked him up because it was "constant on". We both laughed...... I thought X band was the stuff that opens the grocery store doors. So, as promised.... Valentine paid my ticket. ONCE! In their teeny print it says they will pay the "first" ticket you get, and then .... no more. I'm going to send it back. I think my CD player would pick up X band!

No, I'll hardwire it. Acessories should go off and on with the ignition. For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone would want a 12v acessory plug that is always on. I can't even think of an accessory that anyone would want on all the time. Leave it to Porsche to invent and install something useless. Can anyone think of a reason to have that plug hot all the time? Trickle charging can be done through the cigarette lighter. What is the accessory plug for? (?)

Buzz911S,

Well, I like the accessoy hot all the time. I charge my iPOD for the gym using the cig adaptor while I am in the office so its ready when I leave. That is one example, anyway. However, the real solution would be to choose whether the outlet(s) are switched or always hot through the PCM setup screens. THAT would be slick. That is how my cable box works.

Did you see my DIY on hardwiring the detector in the 997? If you have the self dimming mirrors, you have your solution.

OK, got me there. I guess there are some uses for it that way.... and no, I didn't see your DIY on hardwiring the detector. I do have self dimming mirrors.
Tell me more!

Thanks for your help, 1080iAddict. It's right at the top ... looks like that might be the solution I have been looking for. I'll let you know how it turns out.

You COULD do that, but it is a whole lot easier to have it go off with the ignition switch.

I hard wired the 993, and having the fuse panel inside the car will make doing the same in the 997 a lot easier.

I hardwired my Valentine into the Drivers side fuse box in the footwell. Used an 'add a circuit' fuse into fuse CF6, which is for the rear wiper (if you have coupe), dimmer mirrors, and parking assist (if you have it). It is a switched fuse with very little on it in my Cab, so it works great. V1 on top of windshield with suction cups and wire run around trim, etc.

You can find a ground wire on a nut attached to the car frame to the lower left of the fuse box if you unscrew the three screws that hold the carpet panel over the fuse box. Very easy to take that carpet cover off and on.

Good luck.

I like to charge my cell phone in the car when I am running errands. Can't do that with Japanese cars where the circuit is switched...nice feature of German cars if you ask me.

I've left my V1 on before and had it drain the battery on my 911. Do that once and you'll remember to switch it off!
