Question tipronic break in question ..

My 06 997S tip now has 75 miles on it. I know I'm supposed to vary the RPMs for break in as much as possible up to 4200rpm, but in automatic mode the car shifts before 2200 rpm. Does this mean I should drive it in manual mode and vary the rpms in low gears? In other words, what's better for my engine break in: 30 mph in 2nd gear (manual mode) or 30mph in 4th gear(automatic mode)? The manual states that I shouldn't dog the car along in high gears with low rpms, but the automatic transmission seems to want to do that on its own.
Suggestions?

The TIP in auto mode wants to shift way too early unless you are really accelerating hard. Best to use manual mode and shift when you want to.

I have a tiptronic and I have used the manual mode to break in the engine. You have better control of when to shift. Now if you have gone a spirited drive in manual and now shift to automatic the computer mapping will change to a more aggressive shifting and not change until a higher RPM is reached. It will also vary depending whether or not your in sport mode or not as well. Take care and good luck. E mail me if you need additional info. I absolutely love my 997 S Tiptronic.

I too used the manual mode during the break-in period...at 3000kms now its alot faster and more responsive..seems louder as well.

You have to use manual mode if you don't want the motor to lug...get used to it. Only a serious throttle application will induce a downshift, which will send the tach needle sailing to its right half. Very annoying in traffic. As is the requirement to downshift to first at every stop in order to avoid the flat spot between 2-3k RPM when starting in the default 2nd gear.

In all, I've been VERY disappointed in the Tiptronic transmission. Saps the car of its soul, and provides a frustrating experience in anything less than *****-to-the-wall driving, which is when the shifts finally stop slurring and the steering wheel buttons actually react to your fingers. Of course, my feelings weren't helped when the transmission took a digger while traveling at 80mph in the fast lane, stranding me on a busy Los Angeles freeway, and took 10 days to replace...at the rip old age of 6 months and 6k miles.
