Which other cars did you consider?

"I am in the decision making phase now : 997 S vs. Maserati Gransport! Both are excellent automobiles...its turning out to be a tough call but I have to admit that the Maser engine is truly wonderful."
Dab, one should buy Italian shoes, clothes, wine, and vegatables, but never anything mechanical. You want mechanical, buy German. Please, this is not a shot at Italians, after all, you wouldn't buy German shoes....it's just the way it is.

French are the chefs
Germans are the mechanics
British are the Police
Italians are in charge of Romance
Things are organized and run by the Swiss.

None.
I've wanted a 911 since I was a little kid. Plus I'm 6'4" and I fit in it. I am somewhat limited in choice.
I did test drive a 996, 997 and a 996TT back to back to back. What did it for me was RWD, lotsa power, a decent interior. I figured if I'm getting a 997 why not get the S as I wanted Xenons anyway. The Big Reds were another strong incentive to go to the S. So I ordered one a week before Christmas last year in a snowstorm. Got it in April and the car seems more incredible every time I drive it. It has about 2400km on it so far. Couldn't be happier.

I really only looked at the M3. Had I not driven the 997 right after I drove the M3 I would have gotten the M3. I was VERY impressed with it, had the salesman not been a complete idiot I'd have probably went in and talked #'s with him, who knows what could have happed then. But since the sales guy was so bad I went straight to the Porsche dealer and drove the 997 and bought it on the spot. No regrets, but I do have to say the M3 was a heck of a car!

I didn't buy a 997S or 997. I got a 996 cab last year before 997 cab intro. I was only interested in a cab being in CA. Here is what I considered
1. SC430 - got all the gizmo and folding hardtop, ride is solid, strong engine but less sporty, decided against the rounded shape/looks that just won't hold up in design after a few years.
2. XK8 - back seats are totally useless even as a 2+2, car looks nice but too long, not sporty. Didn't want to test drive bc one look at it you know you are getting an old design.
3. CLK cab - looked at both older 2001 and new 2005 models. Like the old 2001 model looks but no nav, new CLK looks like a sedan made into a cab - which is basically true. Good back seat space like M3. Not sporty and no test drive. GF liked it though
4. SL500 - looks great but no back seats which I really wanted. No test drive.
RE: XLR, I think Caddy's edge sharp design is cool but C6 looks better and is cheaper. I applaud Caddy for stepping out f the Fleetwood era and Catera shame w a look that's unique. C6 is never something I'd consider.
I wasn't a huge fan of 911 but I felt it was a solid car w impressive performance that'll keep looking good year after year. It met my requirements: Cab, 2+2. It exceeded my expectation in braking, acceleration, power-to-weight ratio, cornering, and prestige. I also really like the P car community of enthusiasts. I had a RX7 TT and I really didn't think I could find a tighter family of enthusiasts. How wrong was I!

I too currently drive an E46 M3. Great car but no 911. I have had the car for a year and just can not connect with it. The M3 is a great car, but no sex appeal. Too practical. I have driven several 997's and each time I have to force myself to not buy on the spot. I think I will be ordering very soon, just have to decide which options.

if you think porsches depriciate, check out the downside on the maserati coupes.
the 2 nd generation has been cancelled.....however, according to a new road and track the 2 nd generation will apppear as a new "dino" ferrari in a year or two. pictures look like what the maserati should have been from the get-go. if the current maserati is your choice, make darn sure you get a short lease.
