Default Would you swap your Carrera S for a 996 turbo?

Seriously, considering everything we know about the 997 C2S so far, both good and bad, and taking into account that you would be driving mountain roads at altitudes between 5000 - 9000 feet... would you trade a 9/04 build Carrera S for a -

2002 Seal Grey / Grey 996 turbo with X50, very clean and highly optioned, with only 3100 miles that was sold by the now reselling dealer, serviced by that same dealer, if price wasn't really an issue?

If yes, why?

If no, why not?

Thanks for your input.

go with the turbo... i just bought a 997 and I love it...dont get me wrong...but its not a Turbo...I had 996 TT so I can safetly say that its like having your own personal roller coaster :-) nothing will ever come close to a 996 TT until the 997 TT is out.... I just bought the 997 simply because I think it looks amazing. I was never keen with the 996 look but loved the performance of the 996 TT...they are both amazing cars... Its up to your personal taste I guess... I sacrificed performance for looks... but the 997 TT will be the ultimate Porsche ALL THE LOOKS...THE WIDE ***.... AND THE POWER!!!!

I would keep the 997S because it looks better and more modern than the 996. I've never owned a 996 TT but I've test driven them and the performance is awsome. So what I would do is wait until next year and then get the 997 TT.

I would vote for the Turbo, I have driven the 997S and its a nice refined car but its no comparison to the 996TT as far as performance, just my opinion.

I found driving a 993TT and 996TT disappointing (Sound of small pointy objects being thrown towards my back...).

Yes they're fast, but it felt like the car was doing all the work for you. I got more thrills driving a 993 C4 and a 996 C4S than the turbo versions. I think it's a combination of lag (albeit small) and the more muffled sound of the engine.

My perfect car would be a 996 GT3 with PSM: that engine is something else!

I think it comes down to HOW you like your performance. Faster doesn't have to mean more enjoyable.

No! I wouldn't swap my 997 for a 996 Turbo.

I just sold my 996 TT (stage 3 upgrades) for a 997 S Cab. I drove many different variants of 911s, both in North America and in Europe, 996 TT is a great car, but 997 S is more fun, more modern with better technology in general. Either wait for 997 TT or get a 2 year lease on a 997 S.

Well seeing as every reasonably optioned 997s owner could have bought a slightly used Turbo instead, there are a lot of people that are/did opt for the 997s.

I wouldn't. call me crazy, but the thought of someone beating the crap out of their turbo just days before trading it in is depressing. The thought of people test driving it (beating the crap out of it) to get a taste of "turbo Gs" before the engine is barely warmed up, is depressing.

I'm guessing pricewise, you can have a used turbo or NEW 997s. I'd take the 997 since it is new and improved and it is NEW.

No, I simply don't like the interior or the exterior of the 996's and my 997S is already more car than I will ever use..

NFW.

I own a 997S and recently drove a 996TT (with 1,300 miles on the odo) extensively and there is just no comparison. This isn't a fox-and-the-grapes story here. I seriously considered buying a 996TT because I loved the look of it. I was ready to pull the trigger until I drove it. It just wasn't that great, and was in many ways, inferior to the 997S.

Comparatively speaking, the 996 is cramped (especially the rear), the steering column shakes over road irregularities, the shifter throws are long and somewhat imprecise, the dashboard materials are much lower-grade, the torque off-idle is unimpressive, the engine sound is not sporty, the low-fidelity stereo sound is Yugo-like, the nav system is rudimentary, and on and on.

I'm sure the 996TT is deceptively quick, but to me, it didn't feel as fast as the 997S. I was also more confident with the cornering and handling capability of the 997 vs. 996.

Other than the fact that you gain AWD and the turbo look, I couldn't detect any upsides. To me, the 997S is a superior car and a better value, even against a used 996TT.

That would be a very tough call...but, at altitude I would seriously consider the TT. The AWD makes the car feel very different than the RWD 997S. It's not as refined, but then again, who gets a Porsche 911 for solely refinement?

I mean, there is nothing quite like the intercoolers spooling up and the blast of torque you get...It's pretty addicting...This will even be much more pronouced at altitudes of 5000-9000 feet...

Default Amazed again

Even though it is very very subjective, I wanted to express myself as others have on the board......I am continually and truly amazed about how people have commented on how the exterior of the 997 looks soooo much better than the 996, when essentially the rear end looks similar, that a person who is not biased and does not know Porsche will not be able to tell the difference, the profile of the car has not changed that much really.......the front end on the 996 IMO is edgier post 2002 due to the headlight......and going back in time to the 993 for the front headlight treatment/signals shows a lack of creativity by Porsche versus risks other manufacturers are taking to push the envelope in design......the interior of the 997 IMO is upgraded from a materials standpoint, but looks like any other car these days with all the silver buttons everywhere......
the 996 is actually less confusing and more of a driver's interior......the 996 interior's real knock was that it was the same as the boxster's which was a mistake by Porsche....the 996 interior in leather actually looks pretty good and is more creative and integrated with the exterior....with its flowing design than the 997's IMO again.......so, that all said.... let's all be happy with our cars because we have the means to drive Porsches and they are great machines no matter the year.....the new turbo will be a "b......" on wheels......happy driving..........

No, I'm sure most here could have gotten a turbo if they wanted. I passed on it cause I was never convinced of the interior design. A dumb reason but reason enough for me. Now the 997 turbo, that's a different story!

Don't know what kind of test drive you had in the TT. Come ride with me in my TT sometime...and allow me to prove wrong most of your perfromance related gripes against a TT. Simply put, it will blow your mind away!

P.S. I'm not advocating a TT buy vs a 997S
