20K the first year and about 10k a year after that ....... I have had about 10 new pcars over the last 15 years and this is about what I figured I was loosing every year . When I started buying the 996 the depreciation really got bad . With the 997 it remains to be seen .

there is no way a 997s will depreciate 20k the first year.... look at the 996, msrp for a 2001 coupe was 70k well equiped, 50k used now....thats... 20k in 4 years...20, 10 and 10 k hit in the first 3 years means i could buy a 911s for 40-45k in2008, still under warrenty!!!!..that would be the buy of the century...even 02 m3 coupes are selling for40 k and thats only a 55k car!!!!

Mini Cooper 53 percent
Porsche 911 53 percent
Porsche Boxster 53 percent
Lexus SC430 52 percent
Acura TL 52 percent
Honda s2000 52 percent

I am talking about an 997S or 997S cab both around a 100 * out the door .. you are gonna loose the tax that is 5 K then another 15 if you put some miles on it . I for awhile would buy a new one every year and by the time I figured what I lost in taxes ect. it came out to about 20 that first year .. you can get a 2004 turbo for just under a 100K with low miles .. those guys ust have been over 120 k out the door .

Drive It and Enjoy it.......... if you don't depreciation by beach front property.... but for me they are built to drive... isn't the feeling of driving one of the worlds best cars worth something; at least several thousand dollars a year in relaxation from the stress of the world????

very true.... and life is short and tommorow is not a guarantee....i just like to always analyze costs....just an mental exercise...it should determine what you buy and enjoy....heck, as expensive as real estate has gotten these days, that may decrease in value soon also!!!!

Good question...for the businessman, the Porsches may not be the best car. For the true car enthusiast, depreciation and trips to the dealer are secondary concerns. I have spent (lost) more money on Porsches than I care to remember, but it's probably the best money I've spent. If you're really worried about how much $$ you'll lose, buy a camry or accord. If you truly love cars and driving (I was going to say there is no substitute)... get a Porsche, lose some $$ and smile every time you drive it.

I think we should post another question asking what is the appreciation of the new 997/997S.

If you spend $20k on options, then of course depreciation will be steeper. Very few options hold any significant value. Tax is not a factor of depreciation.

Thanks

Unless it's a salvage or some other unusual situation, I find that VERY hard to believe considering that many dealers simply can't keep 997s in stock.

If it's true, consider yourself VERY lucky. The cheapest 2002+ 996 in the country with average miles is listed at $50k on AutoTrader.com (which would be $20k off a new base model 997 without options).

This was a public transaction I shared with the group last month. Your point is well taken, however, in that I am very much aware of how very lucky I am; every morning when I turn the key.
Thanks
Jack

Why would someone lose their shirt to sell you the car? The dealership will buy back a 997 for 5k-8K under MSRP.
