Nearly two years ago, economic necessities (the purchase of a dream home) forced the sale of my 2002 Cab (after having owned a Boxster and a Boxster S). Since then, I have gone through a Honda S2000 and a Z06 Corvette, knowing all along that sooner or later a Porsche was in my future.
Yesterday, I pulled the trigger on a Seal Grey 997. The car was purchased from a dealership 150 miles from home, so I was able to drive the car for two hours. I now have a dream home and a dream car. Life is good!
To say I am ecstatic an understatements! Sitting behind the wheel of my new 997 felt just like coming home. The s2000 and the Z06 were fine cars in their own right, but neither fit my philosophy of what a great sports car should be like a Porsche 911.
I've lurked on this Board (and others) for two years, noting the comparisons between Porsche's various offerings and picking up a great deal of knowledge about Porsches in general. It is interesting how finely car enthusiasts can split hairs (the 996 is better than the 997, the 997 is better than the 996, the C4S is the only 996 worth having, the 993 is the best Porsche ever, etc., etc.). Bottom line, drive something other than a Porsche for awhile. Then come back. It will give you a true appreciation about what the marque is all about no matter the specific variation.
I have also learned how discussions on these forums can get into your head, i.e. smart guys on the forum don't like a 99_ , a 99_ is better, therefore I need a 99_. In the end, you've got to trust yourself. It's easy to do with a Porsche, no matter the variety, they are all great (I won't pull out the "substitute" cliche).
In any event, I look foward to being a legitimate member of this Board and accordingly have purchased a membership as thanks for the knowledge I have obtained.
l look forward to joining the discussion, especially those that pertain to my new baby!
Everyone say a prayer to the Porsche gods for me that I might avoid the curse of the RMS

Congrats. I felt the same way (coming home) after getting my first Porsche at the age 20 (Boxster) and going through many cars (S4, S2000, and Saleen) and coming back to Porsche (997).
